Wow that's an ignorant statement. Just because graphics aren't going to be trying to look like real life does not mean that graphics won't get better. Look at Pixar's stuff - none of them look real, yet each movie look better than the last.

If this is actually DOA4, and if DOA4 is an Xbox 360 game, this is not what we will be getting. Itaragi, love him or hate him, would not put out a game that looks this ass, the graphics whore that he is. If I was betting, I'd say this was an early version of the game, made to get an initial idea of what the game would end up being, and nothing more.

  2. The lighting model needs a revamp. Everything else looks acceptable, but with the same simple lighting/shaders it doesn't look that far removed from DoA3 which already had a lot of geometry and texture detail.

That hair is not acceptable, not on a next-gen system with so few characters onscreen.

I agree with that, believe me.

    Let me re-word:

DoA won't look much more realistic than DoAU.
We'll see higher resolutions, polycounts, and better effects, but it will always maintain a similar style.

Because anime characters have such realistic looking hair. It's like complaining about the look of the hair in the new Appleseed and saying it's not as big of a visual jump as it should be when compared to something like Advent Children. It's a stylistic design choice.

Itagaki isn't going for a real look, the women of DOA are designed to look like well-endowed cartoon characters and these are also a testament to just how good DOA3 looks (because it's still amazing). HOWEVER, the major question here will be animation and clipping. Will the clothes move and fold like they should, will the hair clip through the shoulders, will the moves actually connect with everyone or will some throws still ghost attack? If the hair in those shots spills over her shoulders and moves in the ways that hair actually does without cutting her arm off, that would actually be a pretty big improvement.

Because really, how often have we ever had realistic moving hair and no clipping (idspispopd)? Yeah, we've moved past the days where doing Michelle's throw on Kuma in Tekken 2 means half of her body disappears into his model but it still needs work.

  6. They said the next generation will be more about "believablity" than realism.

Let me say it again... this isn't an argument about things looking real. It is an argument about the fact that Hitomi's hair is one solid piece with a shitty texture tossed onto it.

Okay then: one character's hair looks out of place. All I saw you say was "That hair" without actually saying what "that" was referring to, and since just about every character's hair (especially Lei Fang's) looks just fine I responded in as general terms as you presented.

  9. I guess I'm in the minority here here, but DoA4 looks astounding. For a fighting game; an Xbox 360 game; or just a videogame in general. I don't even care for the series. But I buy each one becasue I really do enjoy the visuals that much.

It's blurred to hide the fact it isn't complex geometry. It's switched to lower poly models the further it gets away from the camera. The new trend seems to blur the shit out of things to hide this fact.

As for me, I'm pretty underwhlemed by DOA4 so far, but I'll reserve judgement until gameplay details and movies showing off the animation surface.
