On a sadder note, this game is really stupid to play online against competent players. Everything in the game is safe as as all hell due to the lag online, and whoever gets initative first runs the table until the other player can lucksack in either a counterhit or a counter. Eliot really illustrates this -- play him online and you can spazz out a lot of random punch strings and there is relatively little people can do about it. Offline, if they block it or struggle out of a stun sequence, your ass is grass.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Even with the best of connections, the game plays different. I am not alone in this opinion either -- talk to any decent player with experience in fighters and they will tell you that online plays different.Originally Posted by Master of 7s
Things you can react to offline you are unable to react to online, as everything is delayed -- even if it delayed by 60ms (which is really short latency), that ends up being a four-frame lag. Neutral jabs come out in nine to twelve frames, and throws come out in six. Being lagged by somewhere between a quarter to the entire time it takes to execute a move really changes the game.

Well, any online fighter is going to be like this. I mentioned this earlier when talking about my connection against Prince Planet, whose connection unfortunately didn't mesh well with my own. It's one of the reasons why I was initially hesistant in dealing with 2D/3D fighters online again. I haven't bothered counting the frame inconsistency and such as you, but yes -- lag is definitely and will likely, remain a factor until developers can find a way to make the net code as flawless as online matches.Originally Posted by Dipstick

Just a quick follow up on this. After our matches, I took off the wireless adapter and hard wired the connection -- I'm guessing this largely fixed whatever issues existed between our connection, which is not to say that all lag will be eliminated. We all know it won't. In any case, Latro, Hiro, Master and I played match after match last night, and lag seemed minimal.Originally Posted by bahn

Unfortunately, I don't have a 360 yet, so I can't run with the DOA crew like in Ultimate. I do play on my brothers from time to time, his gamertag is...*sigh*...pwninmonkey. Go ahead and add him and I'll try to catch you guys sometime. I've got his account up to a B with 15000 or so Zack dollars, but who knows where it is now.
One of the many problems with even minimal lag are the guaranteed throws. As Dipstick was mentioning, the online game is heavily biased towards the offensive player. Offline, there are many strings that when blocked, have a guaranteed throw/low throw for the defender...but even a little latency will wreck it, and the attacker can just start another string. This makes a lot more strings safe then the game was designed for.
The other thing that favors the attacker on and offline is the new ground attacks, and wall half-stun. Unlike pretty much any other fighter, the ground attacks here frequently force me to get up in a compromised fashion (mostly just forcing me to get up at all when the timing is bad, and without the various rising options). I'm not sure what causes it yet, but for the walls, there's times where you can repeatedly bash people into, or just up against the walls, and they won't go into the invincible "slammed up against wall" state. This can lead to ridiculous amounts of damage if the defender doesn't guess a reversal right. In DOAU, it seemed walls would "reset" a fight much more frequently and give the victim some breathing space after taking a big chunk of damage.
Other observations: The arenas in 4 don't seem as interesting to me as the DOAU arenas (although bull-riding someone down the stairs at the monkey temple with Tina is still AAA gaming). The fruit market is great in particular, but others (the dance club, skyscraper) are kinda bland. Still awesome, and definitely better looking, but not yet clicking with me like Ultimate's. Also, not sure what I think of the "bounce" feature (a la Tekken and SC)...I like it conceptually, but sometimes it seems implemented unfairly, like off Kasumi's low kick reversal, or off some of Lei Feng's kick strings (which already do a ton of damage). Time will tell I guess.

PS: If you are not on my friends list and want to play, toss me a friend request. I wiped a bunch of friends for various reasons recently, but it doesn't mean I don;t want to play.
Which wireless adapter were you using? I'm using my old MN-740 (I think that's the name) and I'm getting vicious lag to people I generally have awesome connections with. I haven't played a single smooth match yet and it's pissing me off, especially since I can't use a wired connection in the same room as my bigass HDTV. Anyone else using the same adapter and not having problems?Originally Posted by Prince Planet
