Thread: Official Nintendo Wii thread

  1. Seth, that is very true, and it was against the strongest Sony in-house stuff available. MS also produced a lot of great stuff like Forza. I would put Nintendo's stuff above most third-party games, but compared to the other first parties, very few of Nintendo's first-party GC games stand up. There's Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, and that's about it (not counting the Zelda collections).

Of course current output is compared to previous output for a company like Nintendo, just like anything else that was successful in the past. It becomes even more important when the first party releases are the only major reason to own the system.

I think if you actually play through Nintendo's N64 lineup again, you might change your mind.
Almost everything worth playing on N64 got an improved sequel on GC, but Nintendo's GC library just didn't have much to offer that's new.
It's pathetic that the GC just barely bests their previous system, but it's not their weakest lineup.

  4. I honestly don't care about the old games unless they are touched up or improved.

The specs of the system are irrelevant as ports are barely an option due to the input device. Any game that is ported to using the revmote that wasn't designed to do so will be awkward. There may be a few games that do it gracefully, but I would rather play those games on PS360.

The big concern now is, how much is this thing gonna cost. The COGS for each unit have to be crazy low (according to the released specs), so if Nintendo makes us pay through the nose to get a system, then screw them. I will actually wait for a price drop for once in my life.

I'm so lying. I'll buy the rev day one. But I'll be bitter about it.

If the first party releases are a good enough reason to own the system, then third party stuff is bonus. I think I'd buy a Rev if it didn't have one single third party publisher committed to it.

  6. Yeah, it had better be cheap.
The other cocern I have is how much of pain in the ass the sensor array will be.
I don't want some octopus of wires dangling over my TV, and I hope it will work properly on smaller screens as well.
My TV is only 13", and my big monitor is VGA only.
If I have to invest in an upscan unit just to play the damn thing, then I may as well buy a 360 instead.

Mario and Zelda are far better on the N64 (and Mario Party was better too, for whatever that's worth). F-Zero and Smash Bros. were better on the Gamecube, and Metroid wasn't on the N64 so the GC wins by default.

Still, the N64 lineup is a hell of a lot more impressive considering the time period those games were made, and considering it has the better entries of Nintendo's two core series.

And Master, I seriously doubt this'll come out costing much. Nintendo's strategy seems to be making an extremely cheap system that they can still sell for a profit at half the cost of the other systems. I'll be very, very surprised if this costs more than $200.

Skip buying a system and get a better TV.

  8. Zelda's not finished on the Cube, Mario was pretty much a wash, and the Cube generation has better original stuff.

The only big name disappointments were the StarFox piles this gen.

  9. Ah yes, I forgot about Starfox. There's a reason for that.

And I dunno, Smash Bros. versus Pikmin is a tough choice.

Mario might be better, I honestly don't like either of them all that much, and I'll wait for Twilight Princess before passing judgement on Zelda.
F-Zero, Wave Race, Mario Kart, Star Fox, and Smash Bros. are arguably better on N64, but Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, and Paper Mario are better on GC, and N64 never had the other Mario sports titles at all, and then there's Metroid, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and DK Jungle Beat.

It's a close call, and a matter of personal taste.
I can see where you're coming from, and I agree that the N64 is more impressive given it's competition and timeframe, but when I look at the systems' libraries on their own merits, I see the GC as the better of the two.
