One thing you could mention: since the Wii is a console, and therefore will most likely remain in the house, you could develop an online system that assumes that every time you turn it on it will most likely be connected to the internet, unlike the DS.
I don't really know how much that changes things. I don't see why Nintendo couldn't blatantly steal from XBLive; the ability to see who is online and who isn't is too useful, and should be accessible from the main menu a la pictochat.
