It's neat. I'm a dumbass and didn't realize the name was a play on somersault until a decade after it came out.

I don't want to see this thread die yet so I'm going to pile on a bunch more.

    Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
    Developer - Capcom
    Publisher - Capcom
    Platform - Arcade

There are plenty of Capcom beat 'em up fans but this game doesn't seem to get the recognition of the others despite being just as good.

    Bureaucracy
    Developer - Infocom/Douglas Adams
    Publisher - Infocom
Platform - nearly all Western computers

If you enjoy Adams' humour and text adventures then you have to play this.

    Ninja Commando
    Developer - Alpha Denshi
    Publisher - SNK
    Platform - Neo Geo

    Awesome overhead view action.

    Elemental Gearbolt
    Developer - Alfa System
    Publisher - Working Designs
    Platform - Playstation

I can never find a decent pic of this one but it is a gun game like no other.

    Biomechanical Toy
    Developer - Zeus
    Publisher - Gaelco
    Platform - Arcade

    Alice in Wonderland meets Contra?

    Zenji
    Developer - Rob Hubbard
    Publisher - Activision
Platform - Atari 8-bit, 5200, Commodore 64, MSX, ColecoVision, Spectrum

Puzzle classic with catchy pseudo-Asian tunes.

    Tinkle Pit
    Developer - Namco
    Publisher - Namco
    Platform - Arcade

13 years after Pac-Man Namco was still innovating in the maze chase genre.

    Star Parodier
    Developer - Kaneko
    Publisher - Hudson
    Platform - Duo

    Cute Star Soldier parody.

    Rescue Mission
    Developer - Sega
    Publisher - Sega
    Platform - Master System

Protect your army buddies in this gun game. It's more addictive than it looks.

    Hagane
    Developer - Hudson/Red
    Publisher - Hudson
    Platform - SNES

    Sort of the SNES' Shinobi.

    Recoil
    Developer - Zipper Interactive
    Publisher - Electronic Arts
    Platform - PC

Tank action. I just gave this another try briefly and to my surprise it runs perfect in XP despite being from six years ago.

    Front Mission Gun Hazard
    Developer - Omiya Soft
    Publisher - Square
    Platform - Super Famicom

An action spin off to the strategy series.

    Diner
    Developer - Mattel/INTV
    Publisher - INTV
    Platform - Intellivision

While it is a Burger Time sequel, it doesn't resemble the original that closely. You have to kick food balls until they reach the bottom.

    Coryoon
    Developer - Naxat
    Publisher - Naxat
    Platform - PC Engine

    D/Generation
    Developer - Abersoft
    Publisher - Mindscape
Platform - Amiga, CD32, ST, PC

    Cyberpunk action/puzzle mix.

    Firepower 2000/Super SWIV
    Developer - The Sales Curve
    Publisher - Sunsoft
    Platform - SNES

Kick ass shooter. Also try Mega SWIV on the PAL Mega Drive.

    Evil Zone
    Developer - Yuke's
    Publisher - Titus
    Platform - Playstation

Okay, I must warn that reviews were very mixed on this game but I loved it. It's worth it for the fucked up characters and dialogue alone. The fighting is simplistic but very enjoyable too.

    Dharma Dojo
    Developer - Metro
    Publisher - Metro
    Platform - Arcade

    The Ninja Kids
    Developer - Taito
    Publisher - Taito
    Platform - Arcade

    Puppet ninja mayhem.

  3. Shatterhand (NES)
Great little platformer that came out late in the life of the NES. Solid graphics and plenty of punching goodness.

    Monster World 4 (Genesis)
I don't know how well MW4 fared in Japan but it isn't widely known over here. It's a real diamond in the rough, combining Platform and RPG elements perfectly.

    Neutopia 2 (TG16)
A Zelda clone to be sure, but great fun nonetheless. I actually hadn't played the NES Zelda games before Neutopia and so when Zelda was released on the SNES I thought it was a Neutopia clone.

    Violinist of Hamlin (SNES)
Another import but unknown in the West. Violinist of Hamlin is probably one of the greatest Platformers of all time, your sidekick adds a great gameplay twist by dressing up in different costumes with differing abilities. You have to actually think sometimes and solve simple puzzles before the time runs out, plus the soundtrack is just plain awesome. Great fun.

    That's it for now.

holy shit, you just blew my mind. I remember playing that on a friends C64 when I was like, 7.

    Tinkle Pit
    Developer - Namco
    Publisher - Namco
    Platform - Arcade

13 years after Pac-Man Namco was still innovating in the maze chase genre.

This game was fun. I downloaded it for mame a while ago simply because of its awesome name.

    Evil Zone
    Developer - Yuke's
    Publisher - Titus
    Platform - Playstation

haha, I just bought that off ebay yesterday. Very retarded but the cinematics of the special moves were awesome IIRC.

  5. I just remembered Microsoft's Pandora's Box.

The game has a few hundred puzzles spread out over a few different puzzle types. Its pretty fun and there's lots of variety. It was designed by Alexei Pajitnov. I got it for free from EB once and it was a favorite. I think you need a patch to get it to run in XP, but whatever.

    Fun game for puzzle fans.

One of my favorites for the system. The robot helper with the ricocheting discs owns all! I always bring up this game and Batman: Return of the Joker as some of the best looking and playing NES games that most people missed.

Also, thanks to NZE on recommending Ninja Commando...I expected some lame beat-em-up, so I never bought it.

    Power Shovel
    Publisher - Acclaim
    Platform - Playstation

Power shovel is obviously about operating a power shovel-- the construction machine used for excavation. The catch is that you do so by simulating the controls of an actual power shovel using the analog sticks to control the shovel and shoulder buttons to operate the treads off the machine. The early stages start off by just making you shovel dirt into trucks, but then things get weirder. Later stages have you tearing down the framework of a house, by only hitting certain support beams, navigating your power shovel through electrified, floating mazes, ladeling curry sauce onto plates on a conveyor belt, and scooping turtles out of a pool. There's even a gallery mode featuring genuine Komatsu power shovels as featured in the game...JapJac used to go on and on about this game and even mentioned that there was a special controller for this released in japan which more accurately recreates the sensation of operating a power shovel (not that I think the guy ever really drove one). Check it out, if for no other reason than to see the PSOne do some simple bump mapping.

    Stretching 384 x 224 into 640 x 480 is one case of something that looks a bit hurting. Something that's an exact multiple (i.e. 768 x 448) isn't as bad.

These damn upscaled modes cause interlace flicker as well- something that's aggravating in the PS2 Metal Slug 3. Why for fuck's sake did SNK have to do that if Konami did not need to for Gradius III (a game that also runs at 304 x 224 in its original arcade version)?

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  8. I nominate Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Great game, I liked it more than Super Mario Bros. back in the day but sadly, all the sequels aren't too hot.

I will bring this game up in every thread about overlooked games or great games of the past. It is by far the best gun game ever. You play the gunner of a super tank, or "ST" who has to battle other ST's for some reason. Your ST is special because you have a seperate gunner and driver. The driver does his best to follow the enemy while you have to shoot it to kingdom come. Its surprisingly strategic, much more than you'd expect from this sort of game. Your rivals have attack patterns and weak points which you must learn to defeat them.

i just bought this game and a superscope recently. i used to play it over and over in my formative years.

I've tried playing this a bunch of times, and nothing about it seemed as extrodinary as you make it out to be. I couldn't see what made it so special.

Almost every game on the master system sucks, except for this. Seriously, it's the only game on the system worth playing.
