Welcome to 1995.
Did the Disney studio steal Kimba and rework it as their "original story", The Lion King? They certainly give that impression with their corporate stance ("we never heard of Tezuka nor Kimba until after The Lion King was released"). And why would they have filed suit to try to prevent the showing of Tezuka Productions' 1997 Jungle Emperor Leo movie at the 1998 Toronto FantAsia Film Festival? (Jungle Emperor was the original title for Kimba The White Lion.) It seems quite simple; Kimba had been kept out of sight in North America for 20 years by that time. And once you can see the two together...

Maybe this is old news, but I was shocked when I found this website a few minutes ago.

Kimba ripped off Bambi.
Fuck, Tezuka owes his entire career to Walt Disney.

There's a reference to this controversy in an old Simpsons episode, the one where Bleeding Gums Murphy dies.

This is true. Although Lion King is far, far more blatant about it. There's being inspired by something and there's manipulating something just enough to evade copyright violation.Originally Posted by Revoltor
I actually never knew that anyone denied that Lion King was based on Kimba. It is pretty sleazy that they won't cop to it.
What the fuck, isn't Lion King just Hamlet?
Doesn't the bad guy screw the the princes mother in hamlet?
Maybe thats a different play.
