Even though it was Clinton who gave them the technology? Read up on your modern history. It takes more than 2 years to develop a nuclear arms program.Originally Posted by shidoshi

Islamic scripture, culture, and governments tend to be:
- Homophobic
- Anti Womens Rights
- Pro Violence
- Opposed to new ideas
- Oppressive of minorities
- Oppressive to citizenry
- Xenophobic
What gives?

I have to agree. Those who speak so hatefully toward the US or its allies are not welcome here. War on Terrorism, eh George? Let's look within our own borders first and ferret out the devils who may be inside.Originally Posted by diffusionx

You don't obviously, but you fucking asked and so I answered as to why I thought that way and said what I originally said. Also, I didn't care what you thought about the matter in the first place, you offered and what you offered was that I was obviously attacking a general principle of "You can disagree with someone and still acknowledge that they're an intelligent person" when I was speaking of a specific person and case. And yeah, I can and will laugh at him next time around.Originally Posted by johnk_

They stand for everything we stand against!
This is partisan garbage. You're equating wanting to protect civil rights, freedom of speech and expression with supporting fundamentalist terrorism or the ideals Muslim fundamentalism. You show me the 'leftist' who said "Man, those terrorists sure are great!" and I'll show you someone who is the exact antithesis of a liberal.Originally Posted by Zerodash
As I said earlier, perhaps we on the left have been too overly protective of civil liberties and not protective enough of human life. Terrorism is a real threat, not an abstract one or one we can simply debate away. It does have to be met with force, but measured force. Sacrifices have to be made, and these may include some of our freedoms.
That is why we need organizations like the ACLU (although even I have begun to lose faith in them, as they seem less interested in doing their real stated duty and more about battling over stupid minutiae with the Christian right) to check the government when they go too far, but even they must understand that up to a point things HAVE to change.
We need balance, and always turning every debate, every news item into another bomb-throwing exercise between the two dominant political idealogies is about as far from balance as one can get.
Time for a change
WWIII is long overdue.
Unless the entire western world wants to end up fighting terrorists forever like Israel, they had better do something now.
The only way to stop the extremists is to wrest control of the muslim lands from them, and help the good people in those lands to build a better society.
Iraq is a perfect example of how not to do that, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.
There's enough opposition to clerical rule in Iran to start a revolution, which we should fully support should it ever happen.
