Oh snap!
PowerVR Series 1 (PCX1 and/or PCX2) Rave Racer for PC - 1996 - unreleased
From Next Generation magazine - Number 19 - July 1996 - pages 54-55
(I would imagine this same or a very similar article appeared in EDGE magazine, probably May or June 1996?)
640 x 480 at 30 FPS - not as good as the System22 arcade (which had more polygons and 60 FPS) but far better than Playstation Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution, Rage Racer, Ridge Racer Type 4, as far as graphics complexity, quality and screen resolution.
By late 1997, it was clear Namco had no intention of releasing this PC conversion of Rave Racer that they developed for NEC-Videologic PowerVR PC cards.
(Air Combat 22 and Tekken or Tekken2 were also announced along with Rave Racer for PowerVR cards. none were ever released).
the only way to play Rave Racer at home, without owning the arcade coin-op, is to either use the System22 emulator called VivaNonno (forget MAME) with at least a 128 MB graphics card and 2 GHz CPU, or get Ridge Racers for PSP which has slightly modified Rave Racer tracks
Oh snap!
This game is a far cry from the blocky, pixel mosaic that PC users have come to expect from 3D gamesHaha! Man, older stuff is always so awesome to read. The Rave Racer demo is running at 30 fps, and that's in hi-res 640x480
Pod is the game that really took it to the console scene (released early 97, I think). It looked better than anything you could find in the arcades as well. Say what you will about the gameplay (sense of speed not so good), but it really solidified thePC's place in state of the art graphics in gaming.
Man I remember this article waaay back in the day, I wanted the damn game bad, but I could never be bothered to pick up that video card (as I already had a 3dfx card). Really enjoyed the arcade version back then too, kinda bummed about a lack of a home port (Namco needs to stop doing their shitty compilations and put out a solid RR one, damnit).

On top of that, the game had very solid online support, with a decent (for the time) network model and lots of post-release support from the developer (they released monthly map/car packs that managed to quadruple the number of tracks in game and added more cars than people knew what to do with).
The game wasn't all that fast (heh), and a lot of the tracks had an odd platforming element to them, but I was addicted to this game for months (between that and Quakeworld, I don't think I bothered with much of anything else).

I'm still waiting for a console port or some century a mame release.

don't wait for MAME, you can play arcade Rave Racer at full speed (60 FPS) with fairly accurate emulation on the emulator called VivaNonno, and of course, you need the Rave Racer rom. this has been possible since August 2002.

Fuck, this game and Super GT... I will have them on a console someday.
As for that Tekken 2 PC port, it never made it out? I remember seeing it on an FTP years ago... we're talking '96 or '97. I was on dialup and was lucky enough to get the Japanese PC Shin Samurai Spirits, so I didn't bother trying to get it. Could have been fake, sure.
I remember 4 Namco games announced for PC - none of them came outOriginally Posted by Grave
Ridge Racer (announced 1994 or 1995) for Pentium PCs, not 3D-accelerated
Rave Racer, Air Combat 22 (not Ace Combat 2 but the arcade Air Combat 22)
and Tekken or Tekken2 (announced in 1996) for PowerVR accelerated PCs.
