Thread: Resident Evil 5 - Official

  1. Dude, you have not even got out of the first level.

  2. That's the beauty of the internet.

  4. The USPS stopped being lame and finally got this to me. I'll be on around 10pm est if anyone would like to get in some hot co-op action.

  5. I'm convinced this is the first "casual hardcore" game. The proof?

    HARDCORE!
    =========
    1. Blood in it
    2. Guns in it
    3. Elaborate forms of death
    4. Potential to talk about real issues (African countries being exploited) being overshadowed by the shallow-end shit, the dev never touches the deep stuff, and everyone feels like they're smart because they talk about the supposed message of a white guy shooting black guys.
    5. Nonsensical story told in elaborate and well-directed cut scenes with slow-mo.
    6. People take the story seriously and think it's a measure better than the RE movies.
    7. Over complicated controls
    8. Plenty of extras and unlockables
    9. Online and co-op

    CASUAL!
    =======
    1. Easy to finish
    2. Go from point a to point b
    3. Eliminate backtracking entirely
    4. Setting a good chunk of story to the side and making it optional (Library)
    5. Allowing purchasing/upgrading gear at practically every turn.
    6. Checkpoints & auto-saving
    7. Allowing the player to replay any chapter they've finished at any time on any difficulty (even if they never finished it on veteran they can pick it)
    8. Online and co-op.

    I am really enjoying RE5. All the arbitrary bullshit that has been force-fed to gamers since the PS1 is either eliminated, pushed to the side, or streamlined.

    I know the story is a joke, but it's fun blockbuster nonsense that I've loved since the first. It's not scary anymore but neither was 4. Both games create tension in different ways though - 4 with arbitrary limits, 5 with dissolving the safety net of menus.

    Gameplay is same as 4 but sleeker. No need to worry about saving, finding a merchant (although I miss his creepiness), or beating the game in order to continue amassing stockpiles of gear. Easily my fav RE conceptually, even though it does get a little redonkulous at Chapter 4.

    I would have to agree with most of this.
    Got it yesterday and played alone through the first two chapters, which was fun, then played them again with a buddy, which was great.
    Played another two chapters tonight with Whitefolks, which was a whole lot of fun. The game looks amazing, and while I thought there would be an option to move while aiming I don't find myself hating it like I did with the demo.
    I also like that I'm able to get through the game, whereas I got stuck at one point in 4 and got so frustrated that I never finished the game. This one seems much more accesable, either because of the checkpoints or the lack of any real challenge with most enemies. But either way it is fun as hell to play and playing with someone who's already beat it makes the game an easy but great way to spend an afternoon.
    So far at least a 9/10 for me.

  7. I'm going to try and be on around 11, shout me a holler if you wanna co-op with me.

  8. I broke down and bought this game used yesterday. I played through what I'm guessing is most of the first chapter tonight. I just beat that first boss that you fry in the furnace. So far I am pleasantly surprised by the game. The demo really turned me off, but the final product is very fun and streamlined. I agree with everything Hero said about the game.

    The game has me hooked at this point, and I would have kept playing it, but my vertigo doesn't allow me to play games for more than an hour or two at a time these days. I'll definitely be playing this some more tomorrow though

    I never finished re4. Lame, right?

    Not lame, because RE 4 was overly long, and some areas just dragged on relentlessly. If RE 5 keeps up the fast pace it has through the first level then I think I'll like it better than RE 4.
