Thread: V for Vendetta

  1. Saw the movie, read the book. Loved both. Are there significant changes? Yes, but the movie is still good, regardless of the changes, which nearly ALL adaptations undergo.

One doesn't take away from the other (in this case).

    QFT. I'm agreeing with Joust?

Anyway I have a feeling the comic could be a lot better, we're gonna go out and grab it tomorrow. This movie delivered for me though. Entirely entertaining and fun to watch. V's first v-filled monologue had my mouth on the floor, writhing in nerdly ecstacy. I also really liked looking for all the V's subtly (and not so subtly) worked into the backgrounds.

Regus is spot on about the end, I thought that was cool.

  3. I always say that comic book movies should stay true to the source material, so I sympathize with what MVS is saying, but the movie is very good. I haven't read the V comics, but when I go in to see Batman or Spider-man films, I judge them on their own merits as standalone works of art. I hated that Peter Parker shot organically produced webs from his body, but that didn't cause me to rate the movie any lower as a movie.

Similarly, when I go read Alan Moore's comic, I would be surprised if I didn't like it more than the film, but that doesn't mean the film wasn't damn good. It drew me in and kept me interested. It made me want to read the comic. Truthfully, the only thing MVS listed that I think should have been added to the movie is the fleshing out of Finch's character. I think he could have been used a lot more interestingly. But, rather than playing the coulda-shoulda-been-in-there game, I judge a piece of art on what's actually in there and how much it engages me. And the V movie was more satisfying than 90% of the movies I've seen at a cinema. It was shorter than I would have liked, but what was included was gripping and entertaining.

    9/10.

  5. Ok, MVS says that its a shit movie, then gives it a score of 7/10. He also said that Eternal Sunshine was a shit movie (i think he may have even called it typical or cliche, though i may be wrong). His views on any movie shouldn't warrant this much attention.

I don't care about the original source as it has absolutely nothing to do with how good a movie is. It can change your perception of it, as the movie could be significantly worse than the original source, but it still shouldn't be taken into account when objectively judging a movie. For example, To Kill a Mockingbird is held as one of the better movies of all time despite the book shitting all over it.

I fucking loved this movie. I don't think there has been a dark action/drama this good in a very long time. The visuals were fucking amazing at times, and the story was great. I loved the dialogue in the scene where V kills the old woman in her bed (not the whole "I KILLED YOU 10 MINUTES AGO" shit, i thought that was a little lame, the rest of that conversation was great). The slow motion fight didn't bother me at all, much better than shakey quick cut fight scenes. The copious amounts of blood looked really great too.

As for the down points, i felt that the film was a little slow (particularly when you have a full bladder for the last quarter), but it was kinda needed so it didn't really bother me much, and I just don't think Natalie Portman really sells herself as her character. Her crying when she was getting her head shaved looked really suss. I think she's a good enough actress but she's not suited to such an emotionally extreme role, its just not compatible with her more subtle acting style.

  8. I saw this last night with a couple of friends, and as others have said, the action scenes were both graceful and tasteful (though the slow-motion fight sequence at the end did seem a bit unnecessary) while the various political/philosophical ideas seemed to be presented well enough (i.e. in a mostly neutral light) that it didn’t feel like the filmmakers were trying to beat their own beliefs into my brain; the result: a cinematic experience that was both sensually engaging and intellectually stimulating. Hell, after the show was over I went straight home and spent two hours just reading through several topically-related Wikipedia entries and another hour or so ruminating sleeplessly in my bed.

On a musically-related note: if anyone is interested, there is an excellent progressive metal band named Shadow Gallery that has written several concept albums inspired by the “V for Vendetta” graphic novel (perhaps most prominently, 1998’s “Tyranny” and 2005’s “Room V”). I believe they have some audio samples up on their official website.

I actually dropped 20 bucks on the complete book today. Not good. I don't really have this kind of money to spend. Impressions soon.

BTW MVS, I'm 23 pages in and there's already been explicit references to people at the broadcast facility being gay. I think expounding upon those few pages for the movie was a good idea, because homosexuality is a hugely public issue these days and many people can relate to that kind of persecution, or at least understand it as it is a part of the current social sense.

That's pretty poorly explained, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. It seems to be a more current issue at this time than race-based persecution is.
