Thread: To italicise or not to italicise?

  1. To be fair, SSB, you merely said titles -- so anyone could get the impression that you're not actually talking about "game" titles. The term titles is vague since that can be associated with music titles, movies, books, etc. I understood where you were coming from, but you shouldn't expect everyone to follow your train of thought given the way you phrased it.

  7. Not to turn the Reader Reviews forum into a "Help Glitch With His Problems" forum, but I have another question concerning the correct way of italicising words and figure at least one of you would know the proper way to do it.

Italicising the title of a game is one thing -- Super Mario World, for example -- but what about franchises? If you were to say, "this is the best game in the Mario series blah blah blah," would you italicise the word "Mario" itself?

  8. No, that would be very confusing. If I were talking about Sherlock Holmes novels, I'd say "Sherlock Holmes novels" not "Sherlock Holmes novels."

  9. I've never seen a specific rule for that, but I believe flux is right.

  10. Actually though, if you're referring to the title of the series, then you might want to use italics. "The Mario series" works because you're referring to the character more than you're referring to the title of the series. Same with Sherlock Holmes. But if you wanted to say "the Street Fighter series," I believe you'd probably want to say "the Street Fighter series" because you'd be referring to the title of the series instead of a character.
