Thread: Geeksquad

  1. I know someone who's in training for Geek Squad now, I'm sure I'll have some lovely stories to recount soon enough. I've seen the cars parked outside in my hometown and I've always wondered what the deal with them was.

Out of curiousity, do you work at either the Galleria BB or the Fenway one? They are, hands down, two of the shittiest Best Buys I've been to in terms of actually keeping products in stock, but the employees have been pretty friendly and helpful for the most part, at least, at the Galleria one.

Housecalls do indeed suck (hey, I found out why your computer died. It's infested with ROACHES-true story) but hey, I'd consider doing it for a consistent 18 bucks an hour. People around here are too cheap to pay that though. I wonder how the Geek Squad at the BB that's just about to open up around here will do.

  3. Wow, some of those stories on that anti-Best Buy site are pretty crazy. I mean, I figured it sucked to work there... but only in a general, they-don't-pay-their-workers-enough kind of way. The same as people at grocery stores and whatnot. Man, was I wrong. Those are some pretty harsh stories, I wonder what Best Buy's reaction is to them? (Aside from firing, of course.)

I dont think they really care...Yeah I'd bet they check some of the negitive fedback sites, but really...People dont care about how you are treated, just as long as their TV is less then the competition...

People still love to shop at BB...(I sure as hell don't)...

I used to work at BB way back when, and the stories there are the NORM, not the exception.

  6. It all depends on the people in the store. You could go to Walmart, Circut City, EB, B&N, Shop Rite, whatever and have the same shite happen. No company has some kind of awesome mind ray to turn every ahole that they hire into the best employee ever.

  7. All retail companies have their way of f'ing you over. EB, for example, pays pretty damn close to minimum wage, and gives employees a 10% discount. A shitty discount that people use anyway to give their paychecks right back to EB.

And then they get all pissy when you combine coupons with employee discount with frequent buyer card with price match to some store that doesn't exist...

  8. I just got a job at Circuit City, and the discount is based on the markup of an item, so it varies for EVERYTHING. Also, if it's on sale, you might as well just get that, because the discount is based on the NON-sale price. Want a discount on a PS2? That'll save you a whole 3 CENTS, whooooo!

Neither one. I worked in the Seekonk, Ma store for a while. From my time there I can say alot of what is on that site is probably true. Specially the stuff about management, meetings, and selling strategies used.

I had worked commisoned sales before, so I knew for whatever item I sold be a cell phone or a tv. I'd be making money on it and it would show on my paycheck. I did those sales with minimal stress of a Best Buy like monkey on my back. At BBY it was the opposite supervisors, meeting GM talking and pushing sale up my ass while my check hardly ever cleared $200 (bi-weekly). Cuz of the lack of hours.

But for the most part the people I worked with were great. I never had any personal mishaps there. I just don't like the way the company runs it self now.

Lol and you ain't kidding about the Discounts. Our discounts is/was what ever the BBY pays + 5. So if it was moslty worth it if buying big ticket items. And didn't get any discount on video games systems BBy only makes $3 on PS2's & Xbox's not sure about the cube and the handhelds.

There were some great people that I worked with at Best Buy, the shit comes from corporate. Also, there were some good managers too, but ALL of the good ones either got demoted or fired. This would repeat until a total asshat was in each of the various positions. Admittedly, I can't speak for the whole company, but this occured at all the stores in my area. It's one of the reasons I got the hell out and headed for higher ground.

Although on more recent trips to my old store, it seems that none of the management staff is the same anymore, and only a few of the old employees are still there. The air about the place is less "evil corporation trying to take all your money" and more "90% incompetent staff bumbling about because they all have no experience." The only good employees seemed to be the lifers, and one or two random new guys who know their shit but don't know that other stores pay more.
