Thread: This Month's Haul ~ September Edition

When I bought Euro Shenmue II and Strider 2 from EB they said those were their only copies. I don't think they would have got them in if I hadn't pre-ordered. In general I don't pre-order stuff though.

Something like Euro Shenmue II makes some sense. However, what was your risk if they didn't carry it? You could buy it online cheaper. That's not much risk and certainly not enough to warrant putting money down. I can see $5 for convenience, but paying in full? Come on!

  3. The last thing I preordered was Katamari Damacy. And mine was one of the 3 copies EB got in on day one. The other 2 were preordered as well. In most cases though, Yoshi is right on the money. The only time I'll put $5 down is if it's a niche title that I think they may sell out of really fast and not get more in. I wish I had put $5 down on Nanostray, I've been having a hell of a time finding that one (of course I haven't resorted to buying it online yet).

  4. I can see buying it in full. You might have the $50 now and want to put it towards something you'll enjoy versus the risk of blowing that money later, or just not having it down the line for whatever reason. Plus, by buying it in a brick and mortar store, he avoided shipping fees, and got the game in his hands the second it arrived. I haven't preordered anything in full ever, and I haven't put a preorder down on a game at all since Spikeout Battle Street.

So you waste money to make up for your own lack of discipline. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Right, and you pay for that privilege.

See, not preording that piece of shit could have saved you money if they didn't get it in.

  6. Perhaps that's where I'm thinking wrong. I almost always only put the bare minimum to preorder something if I think it might be harder to get later. Then again, I'm friends with most of the people that work at the local Software Etc. so I don't really need to worry about getting a game held or not.

Preordering by paying full price beforehand is nutso though. Although I guess it's a good thing if you can't manage your money yourself.

Anyways, back to the topic, I got NHL 2K6 (Xbox) and Taiko Drum Master today.

  7. Yoshi, why can't you get off your high horse and just let people spend their money the way they want? I, and quite a few others, actually LIKE Spikeout Battle Street, as well.

Agreed. I always thought Conservatives were all into that "freedom to spend your own money" anti-socialist stuff. Just relax.

The conservative approach is to let people invest their own money, because they can do it better than the government. Besides, all I am doing is stating basic economics. It's up to you guys if you want to go against good financial management principles.

You are making GameStop quite profitable, however, so if you are a shareholder you might care. I personally don't.
Opportunity cost, time value of money, etc., but for $5 over that period of time he wouldn't have accrued shit on it anyway. The opportunity cost to him for that $5 outlay is de minimis.

The value he gets in return is intangible. He gets peace of mind, whether valid or not, in that he believes he is guaranteed a copy of a game he wants ASAP. But you could also look at it like an option, in that he has a purchased a right (but not an obligation) to buy the game upon the initial shipment/release. This can be evidenced by Gamestops refusing to sell reserved/pre-ordered titles to non pre-order customers if supply doesn't meet demand upon release.

    Jeremy, stop your noise.
