Thread: Nintendo DS touch screen durability, PSP screen durability

  1. Nintendo DS touch screen durability, PSP screen durability

I haven't heard much about this, but considering there are DS kiosks everywhere and the touch screens seem to still work really well maybe it's a good sign. Most kiosk controllers don't even work. Still, since the touch screen is used for viewing the game a lot of the time, should a screen protector be used? Does it lower responsiveness? I've noticed Nintendo has put out screen protectors that seem to be like colorforms (non-adhesive). Anyone put these to the test?

Also, the design of the PSP lends itself more to scratching just from being toted around than the clamshell design of the DS. Supposedly Sony uses some sort of technology on the screen that allows you to "scrub steel wool against the screen" without scratching it. Just how durable is the PSP screen, is a screen protector optimal/nessesary?

  2. I tried Nintendogs on the DS kiosk at my Best Buy and I could barely see the touch screen due to how scratched up it was.

As for me personally, I don't have any screen protectors, and my DS and PSP are still in near perfect shape, and I've taken them both outside quite a bit. Just be careful, and take care of your stuff.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  3. It just seems like inevitably the touch screen will scratch if you're always dragging a stylus around it. I don't know much about PDA's, do they often run into scratching problems? Are touch screens designed to be scratch-free from normal stylus use (not 10 year olds stabbing at the screen)?

  4. I use screen protectors for my portable electronic devices (PSP, GB, cellphone) except for the SP. Why? It protects the screen and perfect for resale value. The screen of the PSP is very fragile even though Sony supposedly said you can rub steel wool? I think thats a lie. Just using the stock pouch scratches the screen lightly.

That is the only time I have actually seen a screen scratched on the DS when something like that happens...

PSP on the other hand...They said they were going to have that steel wool thing but scrapped it and now it can easily get scratched. I had a screen protector on my PSP within day 2 of getting it. (PSP came from Japan, screen protector from Hong Kong) My screen is fine, don't know if it would be if the screen protector wasn't there though just from putting it in it's case it comes with I heard will scratch it sometimes (that may just be the people that let all sorts of crap get down in that too...)

Your results are very different than mine. I haven't seen a DS kiosk yet where the screen wasn't scratched to hell and the touch calibration wasn't signifigantly messed up.

Same here. I even tried recalibrating the damn things, but they're so fucked up that it doesn't work

If no screen protector, you'll get hairline scratches from wiping.

  9. Yes on screen protectors. Especially on the DS's touch screens. I ran into a bad stylus on my Palm before. No good.

  10. Do screen protectors reduce the responsiveness of a touch screen though?
