Thread: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

  1. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Going into The Exorcism of Emily Rose I knew not to expect to get scared since it was basically PG-13. I've noticed a lot with these PG-13 movies that the director tries to get a cheap scare out of the viewer by making something popup. I know that that's the normal with horror movies, but with a PG-13 rating it is so hard to accomplish this since there can't be a lot of gore.

However, the movie itself should not be viewed as a horror movie. We get an interesting plot that includes the actually exorcisms rather just a movie with only exorcism like I suspected. This really helped boost the movie from what was bad to decent. On top of this, the acting was magnificent. Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott) was by far the best played character. Campbell Scott did an excellent job as the prosecutor. He played the part as if he was the antagonist, and to some extent he was. The rest was the cast also did a wonderful job playing their respective parts. This helped boost the movie from decent to good.

Overall, it was a good film. Don't expect to see original horrifying scenes. Every horror scene in this film has been done before. Nevertheless, the actual plot and the brilliant cast with Campbell Scott stealing the show make this worth the pay of admission. This isn't a classic, but it isn't a failure either.

    Grade: C+

A few side notes: I saw the movie tonight, and man, it was sold out for both showings at a very large movie theatre (AMC 16). We went to a smaller theatre (AMC 8) in the mall and it was packed. I'm predicting this makes $15 million tonight and maybe $25 million over the weekend.

Also, going to the movies is getting worse and worse. Why do people think they should comment on every trailer after it ends? Why do people feel like they should laugh after screaming from getting scared? Why do people answer their cell phones in the middle of a movie? The next generation of moviegoers are retarded.

While what you say is by far the biggest complaints about movie theatres today, the laughter after being scared is just a natural reaction. It's the release of the tension build up, the "everything is okay" feeling. Same thing happens on rollercoasters and other thrilling experiances. Endorphines make people happy.

  4. I thought this movie was excellent. Yeah, it's PG-13 but the way the demonic possesion is protrayed is damn DISTURBING and scary. The way Emily talked and acted was very convincing and sent chills up my spine. It is more realisticly protrayed than The Exorcist (which is an awesome movie as well) and still very scary. The story was well written, and the pacing was great. I would definately reccomend a viewing epecially if you like religious-themed movies like I do. People were laughing in my theatre too, but nobody was laughing during the exorcism.
Edit: I disagree with Campell Scott "stealing the show. He played an asshole prosecuter, which in my opinion could have been done by anybody. Jennifer Carpenter played a far better role as the tortured Emily Rose, she could do all the physical stunts with no CG (and she is in some crazy positions) and played the dual roles of the scared girl and evil demons very well.

I hate these whiny bitches who complain about every bit of noise in a movie theater. Wait for the DVD and watch in your own shitty house.

Stop fucking up my theater experience you no-popcorn buying motherfucker.

    Preach it!
Trailers don't matter. You pay to see movies. I make fun of bad trailers because it's more entertaining than watching what I didn't pay for. Everyone shut the up fuck.

  7. Talking during the movie is one thing, but I can't stand it when people get pissed off about talking before the movie. If you're being annoying while we're trying to watch a worthwhile trailer, that can be a pain. If it is a trailer for a crap movie, have fun with it while watching it, and no matter what it was, feel free to comment afterwards.
WARNING: This post may contain violent and disturbing images.

  8. Talking during the movies is just people getting all the chatter out of their system before the main attraction starts.

  9. So the movie is based on a true story about a girl in Germany who starved to death and was refused medicine because it might interfere with the exorcism. The parents were jailed, and a group of bishops later declared that she hadn't been possessed in the first place.

So what position does this movie take? Naturally, it shows that she really was possessed, and all the stupid doctors were just fucking things up with their damn medicine.

It's about as faithful to the reality of the situation as Amityville Horror was, with the added bonus of a creepy undertone about the evils of science and facts. WHEE

Still, the most offensive thing about it is how shitty it is. Why have no movies since The Exorcist been able to pull this off?

    This line made me laugh:
The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which is based on a true story the same way Harry Potter and Star Wars movies are [...]
