It's a scary situation, but it's not like they're sitting there saying "do do do gee we shouldn't leave this hurricane might be fun!"
Umm, stfu , plz noob, K THANX!

I havent been keeping up with the news on the situation, but I doubt its, in your words, 'IMPOSSIBLE' to get out of the city if they really wanted to. I'd rather sit in traffic at a snails pace and get out of the city than get drowned by a 25 foot surge/wall of water, followed by loss of power for weeks + looting/anarchy.

I lost a surprising amount of good friends/neighbors to Katrina when it hit my home town on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so yeah, when it comes to category 4-5 hurricanes hitting a coastal area - I do think they should get the fuck out. I'd hate to see anyone from these boards die because they just didnt want to wait in traffic for a while.

One day, if you ever move your ass out of San Antonio and drive a 100 miles S/SE to the coastline, and sit through a hurricane you'll learn to appreciate the strength that they are capable of. Until then - fuck off.

  2. If a third hurricane comes ripping through this country let's all blame the Bush administration.

How about we just blame it on it if they set on their ass again?

First, I'm sorry about your friends and neighbors. I wouldn't wish that total fucking nightmare on anyone.

Second, I wasn't trying to insult you; I was just making a statement of fact. In case you weren't aware, there is panic all along the evacuation routes because traffic just isn't going fast enough to get out of range of the storm in time. It's taking people about 13 hours to 45 miles in places. Some people have been on the road for 24+ hours and still haven't left the city. That's a whole other world from "not wanting to sit in traffic a few hours." Add in the fuel shortage and road blockage, and getting out of the city before Saturday morning seems futile at best and potentially deadly at worst. Station and I were wondering earlier what would happen to those people if the storm hit before they could get far enough away, which seems likely, as scary as that thought is. Maybe it's not "IMPOSSIBLE" to escape Houston, but at this point in time it seems trying to leave is just as risky as staying, if not more so.

Third, if you've got a workable method to getting out of the city before the storm hits despite the traffic and fuel situations, let's hear it. I'm not saying this rhetorically; if you know of something, then please let us know. I mean, getting out of Houston is the obvious solution, we all know that, but good advice that can't be put into practice is the same as no advice at all.

This isn't the time or place for an Internet slapfight, especially over something as petty as questioning a given piece of advice.

  5. People need to learn to ride bicycles. The traffic escaping would have a shit load better time getting out of they were all on a bike. 14 hour Traffic Jams and gas Shortages make getting out with a car pretty hard.

  6. Problem with that is the bike ride would probally kill more people than the hurricane. Gotta remember houston is the(?) fattest city in the world, with a nearly constant 100% humidity and summer temperatures (it was 90's all day today) 3/4s of the year and a nasty mosquito problem.

A sudden bike ride of even 20 miles would probally kill most of them. Trust me, down here cars are not just a modern convience, but due to our own fatasses and laziness, a nessisity to most people.

Not to mention it's only an option to people without families. Then you have to consider food and rest, because after the hurricane who knows where you can find either? I don't pretend to be an expert on hurricane survival, but I CAN understand that some people simply don't have the option to leave, due either to ill or elderly family members or lack of adequate transport + survival methods.

I wish everyone having to ride this out the best.

You dont understand - It IS IMPOSSIBLE to leave, at this point, every single outgoing highway and freeway and major interstate is clogged full of broken down vehicles that are either out of gas, overheated, or suffering from some other complication. The people who tried to leave are the ones exposed out there and the authorities can't get to all of them (1 million people tried to evac at the same time) and some of these people will be out in the open when the hurricane hits. Worst way to go - being swept off a freeway by extreme winds. They were better off at home.

In other updates - us three idiots (Tracer, Mars and myself) are still ok on the left side of this bitch, we're going to still get according to the weather men 45-65 mph winds with 70 mph gusts - I hope it keeps that low. If you're on the East districts of Houston - take some side streets to the western counties and take shelter in FortBend or west harris county ! Run to the Hills!

Well not only that but lets not neglect to mention that its an insane idea anyway - consider where you and I live. On a bike (we're talking bicycle not motorcycle) how long would it take to get out to the nearest next neighborhood? Houstons just too big for that nonsense. If you mean having bikes to get them off the highway - well, then the heat thing comes in.

Btw there is now a busfire on a highway, many people considered dead - this is only getting worse.

If they don't respond correctly yes we will.

  10. Seriously, the bicycle idea just wouldn't work if the highways are clogged, and the fatness must be a factor too.
There were people in the less devestated parts NO who wouldn't walk for a couple of hours in knee-high water to get out of the flood zone, so I doubt anyone in Houston would walk for a day or two straight in that kind of heat, even if they could.
