The NFL deal apparently had a loophole that allowed Atari to continue making the game. I think it has something to do with the fact that the games are actually played in the backyard and the players are actually kids. Or something.
I was at Wal-Mart tonight when I browsed the electronics section and noticed that Atari's Backyard Football 2006 had come out. Not just that, but upon closer inspection the box was adorned with both the NFL logo and the NFL Player's Association logo. Now I know it's just some crappy kids football game, but how did they get away with having it offically licensed with the EA/NFL deal and all?
My first thought was (and i don't remember the exact details of the EA/NFL contract) that the deal only covered football "sims," but if that's the case Midway's Blitz series was hardly a sim... What's the deal?

Maybe it's a console/PC thing too. Also, that game was never in competition with Madden.
