Thread: Secret DS conference, Online, FF3, and whole bunch of shit...

  1. Thanks for the clarification, warp. I miss GBA Advance Wars after I (finally) returned it to my friend NixHex311 recently.

  2. In this month's EGM there is a lengthy article on "Which should you buy?" for DS vs. PSP. Both come out about even but i think it's interesting that for DS it's mentioned "3rd parties are currently giving their all to the system. We can only hope this situation lasts." The goodies revealed at this conference make that quote all the more funny.

  3. I don't think I've EVER seen an EGM system comparison that was anywhere near logical.
WARNING: This post may contain violent and disturbing images.

  4. I've noticed a general apologism for the PSP by retail outlets and magazines, and I don't understand it. Every time I go into a videogame shop the clerk talks about how great the PSP is, especially now that it's "coming into it's own" and getting great games. When I say I own the DS I usually get something like "Kirby and Mario 64 are fun and all, but now it's just dog sims".

Most magazine and website "head to head comparisions" consider the fact that UMD's hold more data than DS chips equally important as the fact that the DS has much better games. At most you'll get something like "The PSP will probably have great games someday" as a qualifier for dismissing the DS' vastly superior library. Then they go on to compare the screens (PSP obviously has a prettier screen), bitch that the DS doesn't have an analog stick and can't play mp3's or movies (while overlooking that it can play over 500 GBA games, some of which are among the greatest games ever made for any system), and gush all over the processing power of the PSP. Then they downplay the PSP battery life issue and rank them dead even or give PSP the nod.

It seems like no matter how many great DS games come out, there are people that will not give it a fair shake just because it'd different or not as powerful as the PSP.

  5. I was arguing with my bro about the ds and psp. He was asking what games the ds had and if there was anything being released in the future. When i told him, he seemed surprised. He didn't even know about Nintendogs. That's the non-gamer that Nintendo wants. Maybe he'll get a ds for Christmas. He does love Advance Wars, and almost nothing else, gaming-wize.

At the time this went to press that was probably a logical arguement, on the third party front anyway. There's no way EGM could've peered in to the future and seen this news coming. It blindsided most of us. There's a lot of things EGM does wrong, but this isn't really something to pick out.

It's not as ridiculous as all that - PSP has been outselling DS 3-1 in North America, and Europe looks like it's gonna be a similar situation. Even total crap does well on PSP - I think Coded Arms sold like twice what Meteos did. Only much lower development costs and the fact that publishers probably don't want to see Nintendo go under (they need someone to keep Sony honest, after all) and the DS doing better than PSP in Japan keeps stuff going to it.

We here might get excited by the stuff DS has coming for it, but your average schmoe is probably still more impressed by PSP's functionality, horsepower & Playstation name. It makes sense as a lifestyle device for alot of people, it just has a crap gaming library.

  8. !PSLSD! playstation life style device! that's awesome.

anyway, i don't have either system yet and i don't think i'll be getting one until maybe late next year when i have more games to choose from for both systems. who knows...i might end up with both way down the road. my gba's been keeping me very satisfied gaming wise.

Well, Meteos is kinda obscure and Coded Arms has guns. I mean, I don't think that's a fair comparison.

  10. I think Lumines sold twice what Coded Arms did.
