Yes, you can get away with one DS. The Nintendo Power article states that up to four people can live in the same town. You all live in the same house (instead of having four separate homes like the GCN version), and when one plays, the other one is asleep.

Also, if for some reason you and your girlfriend break up, you can move yourself and your stuff to another DS and game.

Yeah, right - I know how it goes. They break up, and he has to move his character to a new town, but she gets to keep all of his stuff.

That's... really dumb. Why can't I just choose the face I want to use without going through all of that? I mean, it's fine now that I know what to answer to get what I want, but a lot of people won't, and there's no reason to make it such a chose to get the character the way you want them to be.
