The first thing that springs to mind is a defensive system, in which you can either have the non-interacting guys put up blocking to slightly lessen damage and/or employ another timed ring sequence when they get hit for either lessening damage or counterattacking. Another way would be to have seperate move bars for the characters along the lines of Grandia 2. I'm sure if I actually thought about it for longer then two seconds I could probably come up with more ideas.

As is it's just really wierd running around with one person while the other two just stand there and take it like mindless zombies. I know some people complained about the Star Ocean way of doing things but I rather liked my guys running around still doing stuff even when I wasn't directly controlling them.

Ah, that's a good idea, but different from what you were complaining about.

It does look weird that they don't do anything, but it's a necessary evil for this kind of battle system. I just think of it as a game of chess. But with sorcery. And big boobs.

  3. Doesn't Atlus distribute NIS games? I know Atelier Iris was, but i'd have to dig the other N1 games out of storage to check.
    Donk

I just mostly wish that they'd do something. I'm getting used to it and abusing it in its own way but it just makes my team look so lifeless, especially when they went to the trouble of adding in so many extra details for things like having your teammates talk about how cool it is when you score a critical. It just sorta drives home that point when a guy will stand there for a couple minutes not moving at all and then suddenly bust out with, "Great strike!"

Not a huge deal or anything, it just kinda irks me. I'm willing to overlook it since the rest of the battle system is good enough, and it's also really nice having a skill ladder that evolves based on what abilities you're using that doesn't suck like attempts from other games. Not that it seems to take that long to master skill levels (at least at my current early state) but it's still cool.

  5. Is MC fun to play and worth $55? I was at Gamestop last night & almost bought it after flipping through the contents (a "new & opened" display). Although the boxart & extras are awesome, the gameplay sounds mediocre. I liked Riviera for its art & characters, too, but its stifling battle system killed it.

ATLUS did distribute Phantom Brave but you couldn't really call it an ATLUS game. I'm pretty sure Atelier Iris was strictly NIS America (production and distribution).

  8. Really? Maybe it was Makai then?
    Donk

  9. At the ATLUS store, they have listings for Atelier Iris and Makai Kingdom. I don't recall anything on those games (packaging wise or during boot up) that indicate the ATLUS logo. Weird.

Yes, and what an awesome and magical game Atelier was. I can't wait for the 2nd one to be released in the US Spring 2006.

And I preordered Magna Carta, yet it still hasn't shown up in Quebec yet. I really hate the fact that you can't sell games here unless they're coupled with a french manual that everyone throws in the garbage anyways. *Shakes fist at Northern Quebec Area*
