This is the stupidest thing said in the thread yet, which is really an accomplishment. Anyone whose heard Cross's stand-up know he's not a hardcore leftist, if anything he's more a "don't give a fuck, fuck it all" anarchist like Carlin. Who IS the best fucking comedy alive today.

Like Shidoshi and Frog have said, Carlin WAS FUNNY like 20 years ago, now he's just an angry bitter old man, and just not funny, man his old shit about when he was a class clown in catholic school fucking cracks me up, and come one his one line "can you watch a women eat a banana and NOT think about a blow job." is just fucking truth, but that said, his shit now adays blows, it just blows, it's too angry, to spiteful, to much of what he used to make fun of, he used to rip on people who sold their voice or image to sell products, and those jokes were funny and can you imagine my shock when one day I turn on the TV and what do I see him doing a voice over for a fucking dodge neon, I think once his show (which was funny) was cancelled he just got pissed off and bitter

Dane Cook is a very funny comedian, but not a great joke writer. It's mostly absurdist nonsense, and when someone tells you a Dane Cook joke, it's never funny. Which is fine. I think he's a funny bitch, but the material is basically a string of silliness and non-sequiturs. Compare him to comics that focus more on writing like, say Mitch Hedberg, Jim Norton, Dave Attel, Greg Giraldo, etc, and you'll see what I mean.

There are a ton of great comics out ther that don't get the kind of exposure that they deserve. Go see Patrice O'neal, Doug Stanhope, or Joe Rogan some time. Brutal, unapologetic comedians who aren't afraid to speak their version of the truth, even if it means burning bridges, having audiences walk on them, getting banned from clubs, etc, just like the true legends of this biz like Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce. To me, that is the hallmark of a truly great comdian.

Dane cook is damn funny to me, I just had to drive back from deep in PA today 6 1/2 hours, Dane helped make the time go by alot faster

as far as david cross, he's hit or miss for me, I think hes insanely awesome in Arrested Development, but I find some of his stand up too preachy, I don't need a comedians political stance, nor any other entertainer for that matter

Boston's turned out some good ones lately, too. But they all live in New York and New Jersey and made their careers here, so I want to claim them too

I think it's fine if it's funny. Guys like Bill Hicks, Colin Quinn, etc put a lot of their personal views into their comedy, and they do it in a way that is entertaining regardless of if you agree with any of it. I think that's a great thing, and it's what separates them from the Janine Garrofolos and David Crosses.

I had to miss seeing Greg Giraldo this weekend, since I had to put in a bunch of extra hours. Sucks. I might end up missing Charlie Murphy next week because of finals, too.
