Thread: Nintendo DS outlook in 2006

  1. The games are designed to have the screens where they are now. Leave them alone. :-P Making them one big screen would be wacky and the machine would get damaged incredibly fast. That is why they shouldn't mess with where the screens are.

Now, if Nintendo can make the unit a tad thinner and put those now brighter screens into the unit I'll be all over it. Shame I'll have to make a new friend code for Mario Kart, though. I wonder if I'd have to start a new Mario Kart file in order to get a new friend code as well. :X We'll see if the redesign is impresive enough to make me want to rebuy the machine.
I still think the current machine is damn fine, just a bit bulky.

Some of them are, some of them aren't.
In games where one view spans both screens, some developers choose to make a dead zone between screens, while others treat it as one continuous display.
I prefer the latter technique because it doesn't create a blind spot, and it would work better with a redesigned DS.

A PDA style layout would be great for games that only use the touchscreen, but where would the dpad and buttons go?

  3. Adding an analog stick sould be nice.

I really like this redesign concept:

That's a really neat idea. I can't see them adding an analog stick (Although I wish the DS had one too), but I really like the idea of making machine just a little thicker then the SP while keeping all of it's functions.

Damn. Now I'm excited to see what they do on the 17th. Son of a...

My biggest beef with changing things is that they have already developed a standard for the machine. Sonic Rush, for example, has a dead spot between the two screen and it's uses it all the time. Same with Mario & Luigi 2. Others games have it so it just doesn't matter, like Mario Kart, for example, or Castlevania.

Like I said, in the end, if they did put the screens together, I'm sure I'd adjust in the end, but I just really hope they don't do it.

It has been mentioned many times on here why it wouldn't work, dude.

It's an interesting idea, but the hinges for the control portions would have to be STELLAR in order for the unit to work properly over time, and the lack of more bottom bevel below the screen could be a problem.

I really like that design too, actually, if the hinges aren't durable, it works in Nintendo's favor to sell more DS units.... Kinda like Sony.

  7. Oh, it's not a practical design, really. It would make a huge bulge in your pocket, for one. Very nice conceptualization, though.

Does it transform into a robot, too? Maybe the game cartridges could fold out into small condors or jaguars.
