Thread: Futurama Definitely Going Back into cancellation, like it should

  1. It's too much like Family Guy. Pick one and run with that, stop spreading all of your jokes out amongst two series that are essentially the same, shallow thing and make one rompin' stompin' series that kicks all kinds of ass.

It was originally supposed to be on as a new series after Family Guy was canceled... They brought back FG, but they had already started making American Dad, so they didn't stop. This is why, as I said, there was a definite change in the show, because now the episodes were made KNOWING that Family Guy was on, so it's different now, and it has it's own things going for it. I say stick with both of them, it gives me more to watch that I enjoy.

  3. TobalRox, got a link for that movie confirmation? I only recall the stuff you said being discussed back when it was first rumored that they'd do a Futurama movie. And by official confirmation, I mean that Fox has never confirmed it, and even David Cohen denied that it was "on" after West said it was. I'm sure it was just done for legal reasons, much like the Rough Draft animators all but confirming it on their boards time and time again.

  4. I'd rather just have one show like Family Guy have all of the jokes packed in to it than it spread over two shows, making each weaker because of it. Oh well, I still laugh at Family Guy and never really had the issues with it some people do around here.

Futurama is so much better it beats Family Guy's crap's crap out of it. I still can't believe it. I knew when they unofficially announced a movie that they'd probably just rebirth the series. Why potentially commit to 2 or 3 movies (probably costing 20 million or more each to produce) when putting out a series is financially the same and less of a risk?

  5. I doubt the movie would have cost that much, since it was just going to be a DVD movie, not a feature film. Here's TVGuide.com's summation of the Variety piece -
BACK TO THE FUTURAMA: Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox TV is in early discussions to go back into production with Futurama, the Emmy-winning animated series that ran on Fox from March 1999 to August 2003, giving it a Family Guy-style resuscitation. Based on the misadventures of Fry, Leela and Bender, Futurama is set in the year 3000, at which time Lindsay Lohan will have stopped making "news." But until then...

I remember Fox stating that Futurama cost somewhere in the ballpark of 2 million an episode to make, so I doubt Fox would be putting anything less than 10 million in to a full length movie. New episodes is the better bet because they can run in syndication (where they make their major money) on channels like Sci-fi, TBS, Cartoon Network and Comedy Central. A direct to DVD movie really isn't anything but one new source of revenue whereas a series is 3 (advertising, DVD release and syndication).

All I want and care about is more new episodes, even one or two more seasons would be gravy to me.

  7. HAY! Better idea.

Put the Simpsons out to Pasture, pls.

  8. Fox won't be doing that until a cast member is dead, and even then, I could see them doing spin-offs featuring the remaining members. The show does keep a lot of people employed as well, and I'm sure they'd love for that income to keep rolling in.

Andrew, that's true about the show, but I thought you meant they'd put 20-30 million into just one Futurama movie, which would be insane, as it would never make that money back. I agree that bringing the show back is a better bet for them, since there are more ways for them to get their investment back.

I would agree, but seeing American Dad and wondering what kind of shit they'd put in its stead makes me hold off. Not only that, but pairing Futurama and The Simpsons together would atleast give Futurama a sporting chance to finally gain some of the ground it lost since Fox relegated it to 7:00.

  10. Yup, and it's only fair to give us a Simpsons/Futurama hour. Shit, they're doing a Family Guy/American Dad hour, and Seth hasn't done anywhere near as much for Fox as Matt Groening has, nor have they come anywhere near approaching the success of just one of them in the Simpsons.
