Thread: Microsoft Announces External HD-DVD Drive for 360

  1. That's just lame.
Someone will make pirate copies regardless of any anti-piracy schemes.
The consumer will be given the choice to either buy a movie and watch it in 480p, or download it for free and watch it in high-def.

    I'll take option # 2 pls.

  3. Blu-Ray will fuck up HD-DVD so badly, just watch!

  4. If both new formats will play standard DVDs, whats the big deal here? Eventually, whichever format wins the publics favor, all DVD players will be the new format.

I know that I will NEVER replace a standard DVD for it's HD re-release, as long as it still works on the new player. I imagine that most casual consumers just won't care enough to switch either.

If you think that, then you've missed the story link I posted on page 2. Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista, will support HD-DVD. That means most PC's will more than likely run with an HD-DVD, over a Blue-Ray.

Obviously the posters are this board do not count, as you guys represent a more "hardcore" consumer than Joe Schmoe, supported by the fact you're posting on a video game message board.
I highly doubt that. I'm willing to bet that at least a 3rd of the current owners of HD televisions, are looking forward to buying an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray DVD within the next couple of years.

Laser Disc had alot going against it when it came out. First, the media was on huge discs and the thought of having to make room for those is unthinkable. Second, the picture was better, but the price of the movies was rediculously high for a semi-upgrade in video and sound quality. Third, the price of the players never hit a mass appeal price point; by the time DVD arrived, Laser Disc players were still selling in the $500 price range.

I've had my HD set for about a year now. I'm okay with the quality of half the DVD's out there, but there are alot of them that show quality issues at 480p. The Matrix looked pretty cool in S-video on my old Trinitron, but on the HD set, you can see blocky looking color fade in the background. It's almost like watching an FMV sequence on an old computer game.

Once full blown HD television programming has hit full swing. I'm pretty sure alot of people that were impressed with DVD at 480p, are going to be very disappointed when the television broadcasts look better than what they are seeing on DVD.

and Sony will have BD in the PS3, so there. if you think about it, almost all PCs have DVDs, yet 99% of software on PC is CD based....the same just might happen with HD-DVD ROM.....it'll be there mainly for movie watching.

so who knows. but personally i'm all for BD.

  7. Still.....

Who fucking cares? No one watches DVDs on their PCs, and 99% of PC games still use CDs, even though a large number of PCs have DVD drives.
