See, at the very end you go on to state exactly my case. People are damned idiots when it comes to home theater and you know it. Do you know how many people complain about movies they buy having black bars, and wanting full screen versions so they can "see the whole movie"? 25,304,842.

Your average person either won't see much of a difference, or won't care enough to buy a new player. Again, the only way either one will become the next standard by 2015 is if they're shoved down people's throats by them not having any other choice.

Your point has nothing to do with what I said. Sure it means that people are idiots... but wanting a full screen of picture and not noticing a difference in clarity are apples and oranges.

The problem your friends seem to be having is called spyware, and you should let them know it's solved with (relatively) inexpensive security software, not replacing your system, before they waste any more money.

Spyware was not even a term back when this trend started. Things slow down when something like Flash and media players start having higher demands. And video codecs get more and more advanced.

Well, I'll be getting a player... not like I care if other people don't. Ok, that's not true, I want it to survive so it's not like nothing is released in HD, but you know what I mean. If people can't notice a different, too bad for them... I DO notice a difference, and I need something soon since DVD isn't holding up enough.

we think alike. i won't bother build a PC cuz it's just cheaper, instead i pay the extra and get the full package and save myself the hassle.

kindda off-topic, are all PC games going widescreen? i'm asking cuz i'm researching my next PC/widescreen LCD purchase.

it does rule but theres nothing out there that needs that much horsepower. and dells arent terribly "unfashionable". people buy their lcd's all the time (theyre arguably the best) and a lot of their systems are affordabe enough for what you get to seriously consider them an option. alienware/voodoo pc on the other hand are overpriced and gateway/compaq/whatever else are just garbage.

the new 30" dells are where its at. their release will drive the smaller units down in price (hopefully).

a 30" LCD monitor is too much for me since i sit very close to it(likeveryone else), so i'd like to get a 19" or 23"(max) widescreen LCD for my next PC.

any idea on PC games going widescreen? i know halflife 2 and a couple other games have that option. afterall, i dont want to buy a widescreen LCD to find out that the mojority of games run in 4:3 and im forced to stretch the games.

The people I know (casual gamers and non-gamers) would have no interest in a format better than DVD. Even after I own a PS3, I will not buy Blu-Ray DVDs unless it becomes clear that it will be the standard of the future, and I will be able to play the DVDs on all DVD players in the future. (Still, even if that becomes clear, if I buy a Blu-Ray DVD I cannot lend it to friends because they won't have players for it?)

I was there for DVDs on day one. I hated VHS. The difference between Blu/HD DVD and regular DVD isn't nearly as significant as VHS/VCD to DVD. DVD is plently good, and if it weren't we would just go to Superbit.

Couldn't MS have put the HD-DVD format in the 360 for games but not movies, and require some kind of a plug-in adaptor that will allow you play movies on it? By removing the movie functionality, it should lower the cost of having the HD-DVD drive in the system. But those who want to pay for it wouldn't have to buy a clunky attachment.
