It's because someone nearby has a Sirius unit with a powerful FM modulator, and it's stomping over hers. There's actually been alot of complaints and there's supposed to be a recall of some XM units (Sirius too I think) that have FM modulators that are over max spec. With more and more people getting satellite radio and limited unused FM spectrum, it's going to be an increasing problem.

Apparently the latest shipments of XM's new Pioneer Inno have new firmware which disables the FM mod outside of the home cradle, to quell FCC concerns. I bought mine just in time. Sucks for new buyers though, because I love having a self-contained reciever smaller than an iPod - and the FM mod allows me to hop in anyone's car and broadcast over their stereo.

She's probably driving next to someone (or a few people) with Sirius who is using an FM transmitter and getting overpowered. Just a guess but it's possible.

    EDIT: Yeah what sphere79 said.

She wasn't getting Sirius on the XM, she was picking up someone else's FM modulator, who was tuned to Howard on her FM radio.

Innos automatically update their firmware via the sattelite network.

I hope they at least give the choice of doing it. I'll be mighty pissed if all of the sudden I have no mobile FM mod because of uptight old grandmas and the goddamn FCC. Actually, quite a few people will be upset. And even if XM does it, it may reflect badly on the device manufacturer so the problems may not be worth the hassle. I really think they just want to be shipping the crippled units right now to appease their masters, they could really care less what the hardware in the field is doing. This way they can argue they made a good faith effort. For what I don't know, because my Roadie XT FM mod is way more powerful than my Inno one is.

The friggin FCC and RIAA have to have thier noses up satellite radios ass, they're just bitchy that they can't regulate content - although they are trying too.

  6. Howard is now streaming online through the Sirius player. Awesome.

Indeed. They have both Howard 100 & Howard 101 running on the player. I wonder if it will survive the stress load on Monday.

Damn, I missed it. I did catch the Robert Duvall and "Dice" Clay interviews--those were great.

  10. Artie Vs. Crazy Alice is the single greatest thing I've ever heard.

Basically, Artie baited Crazy Alice to take off on one of her rants, and then Artie began a rant of his own back at her to keep her going. This went on for what had to be anywhere from 20 minutes to a half-hour. Hilarious. I thought Artie was going to have a heart attack.
