I vote for totally unnecessary.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/flight93/Flight 93 is a 2006 film chronicling, in real time, the events aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. The film was made with the full cooperation of the families of those onboard. It is slated for release on April 28.
The film is written and directed by Paul Greengrass, and will be the first feature film to focus specifically on the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is reported as being improvised (rather than scripted formally) with reference to the published phone call transcripts as source material, and to be filmed using handheld cameras for immediacy (a directorial preference of Greengrass).
Exploitation or tribute?
I vote for totally unnecessary.
I don't know that we need it, but I don't know that there is really a "need" for a lot of stories, other than being an interesting story - and I think it could be that.

I think the best 9/11 movie was the made-for-TV real-time one that lasted 2-4 weeks.
Unfortunately it wasn't a movie. It's also unfortunate how long I was glued to the television for 3 days sleeping maybe 4 hours every day.
Oliver Stone is working on a 9/11 movie too. Perhaps his name alone will make it a more "legitimate" attempt.
"Chuy, you're going to have a magical life. Because no matter where you go, it's always going to be better than Tucson."
I think it's a bit silly to make a movie about 9/11. We have hundreds of hours of newscasting that could easily be obtained with a simple phone call or letter to the studio, thousands of newspaper articles, hundreds of pictures, thousands of eyewitness accounts and dozens of TV and DVD documentaries about the day. To make a movie about what happened ON the plane is also silly, since no one knows exactly what happened except for the little pieces of info we got from the phone calls. After only five years, it's too soon.
So this movie got 4 stars from Ebert and the last I checked, was at a 93% at RottenTomatoes.
Anyone gonna bite this weekend?

I will go see it. It looks like a good movie.
