Thread: Transformers Live Action Movie

  1. Blade Runner was rife with product placement, and it didn't hurt the movie. Hell, I feel like it added to it, made it seem like part of the real world. Hurt the products, though.

Of course, the ads didn't directly intersect blatantly with what was happening onscreen, whereas in Transformers (and The Island lol), things are interacting directly with products to point them out.

I think there's a difference between having something as a background element and making it part of the movie's world vs. waving it around blatantly and taking the audience out of the movie. The word is "subtle".

Best product placement ever was in Repo Man.

  2. I'd rather have real products over the generic shit any day. It's like in a movie or show when someone wants sits at a bar and says "Gimme a beer." and the bartender gives him a beer. I would like to visit one of these mythical bars that only serve one kind of beer. It just takes you out of the reality.
I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.

Having a real beer would make it a background element, and serve to solidify the world of the movie, in this case.

Repo Man is actually a terrible example of what I'm talking about.

Now if Budweiser or whatever becomes a plot element or character, there lie issues.

  4. The product placement doesn't bother me, but it certainly made sense why it could bother some.

GMC cars pull up, they don't focus on the cars, the people in them, or anything, all it was was GMC -> GMC -> GMC -> GMC ->GMC main screen for 5 seconds.

And A mountain dew only thing? yeah when the fuck have you ever seen that. That was just as bad as a knock off of a real product.

  5. Products in films aren't inherently bad (real world omg), it's just when the fucking movie stops for a blatant commercial. Even movies that joke about it (hi to you, "Evolution" Dandruff Shampoo ad) are way guilty of this.

  6. I've seen some pretty disgusting product placement in movies and it usually bothers me a lot, but it wasn't so bad in Transformers. It felt somewhat organic and not forced. I mean, it's a movie about cars, you're gonna see car company logos. I really didn't feel like they were lingering too much on any one product.

Some of the worst product placement I've ever seen was in Blade: Trinity, which was basically an hour and a half commercial for the iPod and iTunes.

As for movies that use "fake" products in place of real ones, it doesn't bother me at all. If anything, I appreciate how they're turning down money instead of assaulting you with undercover ads.

Dolemite, the Bad-Ass King of all Pimps and Hustlers
Gymkata: I mean look at da lil playah woblin his way into our hearts in the sig awwwwwww

  7. Best "product placement" was Truman Show:

Meryl: Why don't you let me fix you some of this Mococoa drink, all natural cocoa beans from the upper slopes of Mount Nicaragua, no artificial sweeteners!
Truman: What the hell are you talking about?!? Who are you talking to?!?

  8. lol yeah I remember that.

  9. All scenes involving the main character and that sector 7 guy should have been deleted anyways, and then you wouldn't ahve to worry about it.
    Check out Mr. Businessman
He bought some wild, wild life
On the way to the stock exchange
He got some wild, wild life

  10. The only really blatant product placement that I can recall was the 360. Other than that it was one long giant car ad, but that's ok, robots in disguise have to disguise themselves as something. Oh though I will say the new Bumblebee kinda reeked of "If you want us in it, you gotta show it in the best possible light"
