Thread: Megaman Zex DS

  1. that's true but...hopefully they'll get just get better at making 3D characters/sprites look good. i think 3D has the potential to rival or surpass 2D graphics in some ways but it just has to be handled well.

  2. It isn't going to happen on the PSP, though.

You take that back! Powered Up and it's bowling ball-headed MM looked kinda goofy, but Maverick Hunter X was stunning. I don't know how anyone could look at the beginning of that first stage with the traffic moving in the background and not be impressed. The colours came through really well on the sharp screen, too. And the positive side effect of 2.5D is that everything can have seamless animation.

But ZX sounds really good too. Megavania isn't a bad direction to take the series in, I hope they do more of it.

Yeah, but it really isn't that much of a Metroidvania. I mean, yes all or most of the levels are linked to each other, but not in such a way to make you think of a Metroid or Castlevania game. You gradually open up new areas, but its more due to gaining higher key cards then equipment upgrades to reach high ledges or etc. Either way, it's hard to coin ZX with any other level design term, so I guess it being branded a Metroidvania holds *some* truth to it.

And I finished it this morning. Really solid. I think I like this more than X. (No thanks to another MMX Opening Stage by Capcom).

Like I said, MHX does look plenty good for the hardware, but I don't even know that I prefer it to the original, and certainly not as much as ZX, visually.

Yeah, people shouldn't get the wrong idea. The whole thing is stull broken into levels and the missions still feel like classic megaman, but since everything is connected it just lends more of a coherent feel to the world.

You can still fight the bosses in any order, for example, and doing this still involves fighting through some themed level to get to a boss at the end. It's still Megaman.

  6. This game is pretty easy compared to Zero, but the final boss rush made me bite my DS. Literally.

Also, rocca, I can kill Omega, but how the hell do you get back accross that spikey pit with the vanishing platforms?

  7. Nice to hear the positive impressions on Zex, thanks Frog. Sounds like a competent change up.

And I love Powered Up's visuals. The game is loaded with ace facial expressions and lively character animations. IMHO the cartoon approach in 3D was handled very well by Inafune's devs.

They didn't put it on PSP because they want to sell more than four copies.

I only just today heard this was sorta Megavania-ish, but then I come in here to find that may have been an exaggeration.

Sure, Rockman ZX sold better than the Rockman remakes in Japan, but according to Media Create, Rockman ZX sales in Japan is still more than 25,000 units behind Maverick Hunter X in North America (ZX's 81,000 to date vs. MHX's 109,000 as recent as July). Perhaps Capcom is just looking at the big picture; worldwide sales.

Think about it. On a global scale, third party game sales tend to be higher on PSP than DS (with the obvious exceptions like Tamogotchi Connection and FFIII DS).
