Nickelodean used to be cutting edge, and with a money making powerhouse like Sponge Bob Square Pants they couldn't stay afloat. One trick pony's seldom can, which is a great parrallel to Take Two's GTA franchise being the only real money maker for that company.
Nick grew bloated by its success but failed to remember that quality programming was the key to keeping its foundation solid and succumbed to the weight of its own obsolescent practices.

No, you're wrong. This theory is okay, but naive and a little bit ignorant. Most shows are in a huge debt. The cost of upstarting production is huge, which is why smaller networks seldom tried to even make shows, but rather show older ones (thus syndication was born). Lots of money can be made by running shows in syndication, but the initial debt won't be repayed for many years (although I will concede that the introduction of DVD season releases has completely revolutionized television revenue).Originally Posted by IronPlant
The reason why the 100th episode of a series is so celebrated is because it's typically the episode where a show actually started to produce a profit. Shows of moderate ratings can still do this, but hits like a Simpsons or Family Guy or Desperate Housewives or Lost end up making the network a LOT in advertising revenue. This means it's still more profiteable to create a show striving for longevity than it is to make one, cut it loose and then run it in syndication.
I'm not sure where you got the notion that the major networks received money from advertising that other (smaller) networks ran while their program aired, but you're wrong. Usually a contract is negotiated for a show once it reaches a certain season for other networks to buy up the rights to their lower seasons. This is also why you more typically see Everybody Loves Raymond season 1 2 and 3 over season's 7, 8, and 9. Certain networks usually scoop up exclusive rights to air the later seasons with hopes that they will draw more.
Anyway, that's far too much thought to be put in to syndication and how television works, but there you have it. Hopefully nobody actually put stock in your theory and realize how incorrect it was.
