Thanks for the heads up. Sad thing is, they will probably take their sweet time releasing another official (retail) stick due to lack of interest/applicable titles. Still hope this makes it out for xbox/360, just for Live. I'd make do with the stock pad in the meantime as long as that was the case.

Didn't SNK make some special pad that they packed in with KOF '94 Rebout that used a stick like the NGPC? I think it was supposed to be like the Neo CD's pack in pad (couldn't say for sure as I've never had the opportunity to play one). Looked like it might be kinda cool but being import only and kinda costly (40-50) kept me from checking it out.

General opinion was that they are only a saturn pad by the design of the outer shell, while the insides are nowhere near the quality of an actual oldschool Saturn pad. Again, I never actually got to use one of these, but its kind of a niche item to begin with so when the target audience is displeased its probably a risky investment.

Its a remake of the Neo Geo CD pad, and it is similar to the NGPC pad. Its the best control pad for 2D fighters I have ever used. Still not up to par with Sticks.

That one might kinda be worth it then, being as its PS2 and adaptors for nearly any system, retro or otherwise, are pretty much readily available. Also, a good stick could still cost a guy twice what those go for (assuming these can still be had for the original retail price).

(Well, aside from anyone desiring to hack it)...
Man, screw the consensus of hardcore joystick enthusiasts... the Hori stick is pretty awesome. I don't particularly care for it clicking, but it's a damn realiable stick. I don't have ANY problems executing moves and for casual players that are just looking for something other than having to deal with a pad can't go wrong with this. Just my two cents.

For real. Regardless if you're playing 2D or 3D fighters, a stick is the way to go. Can't imagine playing competitive play with a control pad.

It's not even about the circular motions. It's every move that requires you to press multiple buttons simultaneously or any combo that requires you to press different buttons in quick succession (here I am thinking mostly of the Vs. games). I can't bust out EX moves in combos using a pad when I play Third Strike... like Dudley's standing roundhouse into his EX punch thing, I can't do that on a pad.

The only way it becomes playable is when they redesign the controls, like in MotM when they got rid of all multiple button press moves and made them quarter circle commands or charge moves.
Yeah, guys like Dudley require solid execution -- if it comes to 360 -- pick up the DOA4 stick.

Hey -- do you actually still play SFAC (online)? Been thinking of going back to that.

  5. I used to play SF with the pad on my right knee and play it like an arcade stick ... the only diff is that my left hand is supporting the controller and moving the pad.

I LOVED THE JAP SATURN CONTROLLER.

  6. Hahah.... yeah, I used to play some of my games like that -- 3D fighters (i.e. Soul Calibur) included. Good times.

I only played 3rd strike for a little while, when it first came out on xbox, then I realized that I really wasn't learning anything from my random play. Most people I played weren't very good (online or off) and I never got used to online parry timing. I could be convinced to give it another try, though...last monday was the first time in months that I played it.

  8. Monday works cuz I am off. To be honest, I am not all that great in TS myself, which is one of the reasons why I mostly stuck to SSF2T.

  9. I can pull off 360 on a pad most of the time, but I can only do 720 during a jump or attack, or when waking up.
As far as pressing multiple buttons go, I don't find it that hard to press two adjacent buttons simultaneously, and most pads have enough buttons available that you can assign a couple of them as multiple buttons.

The worst thing about playing SF with the DualShock, aside from the dpad, is that the games themselves have such stupid limitations when it comes to button configuration.
I like having weak and strong attacks on the face buttons, and medium attacks on the opposite shoulder buttons, which is no problem at all.
But I also would like to set R2=LK+HK and L2=LP+HP, that way I can have PP and KK, and if I press both shoulder buttons on one side, I get PPP and KKK.
Unfortunately, every SF port ever can only set PP as LP+MP and KK as LK+MK.
This is one of the reasons why I prefer MAME for SF.

  10. I played SSF2T over a friend's house on CPS2 and really wanted to learn how to play that.

My 3rd strike isn't awesome or anything, it's just kinda discouraging to know that I'm rusty, I never learned how to play the game really well to being with, but I've yet to find anyone to play with on the regular that can call me on all the mistakes I make. Still, though, it's been long enough to give it another shot. Monday it is...
