Thread: Going back to school

  1. What about other occupations besides the ones that requires collage education or retail. Like the trades like plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc. They make decent money where i live especially if theyre self employed.

But being a cook is ok. Especially if you aim at the high end market. And there is always the option of running your own resturant. I dont know how it is in the states but here i think its costum to work as an aprentice after cooking school, for low wage.

  2. It's like that for any job... not necessarily bad money. Just not enough to really live to well off of. Once you work and get some experience, you make more money. That's how the world works. I think most people understand that.
I do but my topic was about the decision to do what I want or stick with what I have.

  3. Half a million dollars is good money to retire on, it's more than most people have.

  4. I'm currently going back to school for a Business degree, I turn 26 in a couple weeks. I'll be 28 when I graduate, my goal is to be making 100k a year by 35. By then I'll be investing in real estate and stock, and I'll have enough money to start my own business, do whatever I want and be happy. Get away from retail, you can find soul sucking jobs that pay a lot better.

You don't sound so sure about the cooking thing, going back to school is great but you don't want to end up with 2 degrees you regret. My advice is to start taking general classes when you go back in various subjects, see what you like. If you have a degree in media and would love a job in that field I suggest you start pursuing that. You'll have to work for shitty pay or no pay as an intern at first, but if you want it bad enough eventually you'll be happy. As a cook you'll have to pay your dues too, so ask yourself which field you'd rather be in.

  5. People do stupid shit with their money, debt murders people because they are not smart with their money. A great example is a new car before you're out of college or something to that effect. Putting anything on Credit that isn't of dire consequence is a shitty idea (unless it's very specificly for credit building (which you have to be smart about too)). Housing and cars and fancy shit is a big big culprit in peeps financial lives.

I personally do not like credit cards or the notion of buying things on credit unless it's business entities or the government. People are too stupid with money that isn't theirs.

If people had self control they wouldn't work for money, they'd have money work for them. End of story. Don't bother saving money, invest it intelligently and avoid needless debt and expense and you can retire with loads of cash easy.

BTW, the job market now is incredible if you're in the right field. Too many people get stupid shit degrees like Liberal Arts degrees or some other such degree that no one gives a shit about.

I'm an accounting major at University of Central Florida, if I do well in school, be active in accouting groups and internships and such and keep my legal and ethical record clean I have a near guaranteed job (maybe not super high paying but I'll have it while Computer Science grads and others like them desperately try to find work now that the market is saturated)

So yeah, DiffX and Yoshi are right about this shit.
