Thread: Dead or Alive crew (colors posted)

  1. Amazing. My only concern is Lei Fang's face. She looks like she's totally distracted while kicking some one's ass. If her leg was down it wouldn't be a problem, but then we wouldn't have the gratuitous fan service, now would we? And Zack's foot is humongously huge. I like it though.
    All is well.

  2. I've changed her face again, just didn't bother posting the edit.

  3. Tina looks like she's yawning, or perhaps getting ready to take a big bite out of a sandwich. Actually, almost all the female characters have somewhat tired/bored expressions on their faces.

Um, that's really the only negative I could could come up with. Great detail and nice, fluid poses. You said you could draw a better cover, and you easily did. And on that note, fuck you and your artistic talent. I hate you. *sob*

How long did it take you to pencil that pic?

And unlike the others, I actually like how Lei Fang's mouth/face came out. She DOES look a tad on the worried side, but who cares.

  4. hm, hope i'm not a bit too late on this. I totally dig your skills, but I just wanted to point out a few things that would make it super amazing and not just good amazing.

Tina looks way too much like a man, and even though she looks like a shitty man in the games as well (not that your drawing is shitty, it totally isn't), she looks a little too manly here. her arms and stomach are just a little too muscular. I dont mind her expression too much, she just doesnt look much like Tina.

Lei Fang's foot doesn't look right at all. I think it needs to be angled differently, it looks really out of place how it is.

The only other thing I could say that could maybe be changed a little is Jan lee's right forearm, it's foreshortened a little small for his size I think.

anyway, this is great work (especially Ryu and Christie) and I only give criticism because I think it could look even better.

  7. Hey Fury, what program(s) do you use to color in your artwork?
    R.I.P. Paragon Studios

  8. I'm a newb, and only know how to use photoshop (7 in this case). I've seen people do great things with Painter though, but I really rely on the all the channel/masking tools in PS, and I'm not sure how or if Painter can do them.

There's some other program that allows you to rotate the canvas at will with the keys, which is great for people who are biased when drawing certain directions (for instance, my right hand is much more accurate doing clockwise motions than counter-clockwise). It's akin to moving your piece of paper around as you draw. I'll update if I remember it; I saw guys using it at Comic-Con and it seemed good.

  9. My understanding of painter was that it had a toolset that really helped with producing photo quality matte stuff. Photoshop seems to be a good standard, but it comes down to preference.

Anyway, I love your work despite it having a slight anime-ish feel to it. I'm not a huge fan of anime but I enjoy your stuff so that says something. I obviously don't have the skills to really critique anything other than that some of the females seem to be a little bit too muscular. Like, there may physically be muscles there but fit females are usually sleaker than men.

    Great stuff as usual.

I think what really helps your stuff is the differenciation of textures. Skin and leather look physically different from one another, the same with hair and eyes and metal, etc. I used to be able to photoshop realistic looking hair but I never kept up with it.

  10. Thanks for the compliments; I'll post the final colors a little later today. Satsuki mentioned the muscularity too...when you say "females are usually sleaker than men" you mean in real life, I assume? I mean, they're definitely sleaker than the males in the picture.

I might just have a preference for more muscley females as well, especially when they're supposed to be competitive with men in physical things. Sure, Lei Fang uses chi or whatever, but Tina has nothing but brute strength to back her style up. Seeing Hilary Swank all ripped out in Million Dollar Baby kinda gave me an appreciation for a well-muscled but still pleasing female shape. It's something to play with, in any case*.

    *omg double-entendre!

edit: oops, gross. One of my worst typos ever.
