Thread: TNL Movie: Old Boy

  1. I keep hearing about what a "great" movie this is supposed to be.

But the idea of watching a film where the main character eats a live octopus on-screen for real (I'm told the actor shoves a large, live octopus right into his mouth and starts chewing while its tenticles writhe about) sickens me. I love fake gore and sick crap in movies and all, but such callous disregard for actual life for the sole purpose of making some fucking movie is disgusting. Pass.

lol, don't be such a pussy, just close your eyes if it bothers you that much. You are doing yourself a massive disservice by not seeing this excellent movie.

  4. Great, great film.

It's a common asian dish. (maybe not "common", but it's not like he just picks up an octopus on the beach)

He orders the actual dish and eats it.

To me, it wasn't that disgusting and made perfect sense in whole scheme of things.

Now Cannibal Holocaust, the animal-eating in that was ridiculous and grusome.

I can understand the vegetarian viewpoint, but I just don't feel the same about the life of an octopus compared to that of an actual human being. I mean, as stated it's a real dish and the people of that culture have no problem with it. If it's any consolation to you, the actor who did it is a fervet Buddhist and said a prayer immediately after he did the scene.

  6. I was going to see this a while back but didn't because we are watching it in a class this semester. So, I probably won't check it out til then.

I thought that scene was really interesting, and I thought it was CG at first. I was suprised to learn that it was indeed a real, live octopus but it still doesn't bother me. Somebody would have eventually ate him anyway. As for the movie, I just watched it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The plot keeps you guessing right up until the end, and the imagery was astounding. I also enjoyed the "hallway fight" and the musical score was good as well. After everybody watches it I would like to discuss the ending because I wasn't sure I understood it completely (and I have some theories).

If you're not going to watch the films, why are you even a part of the Movie Club?

You call it sickening. Asians call it Tuesday.

It's a real Asian dish and it's very popular (at least with those willing to try it). The selling point and the reason everyone likes it is because the octopus tentacles will start suctioning onto your mouth and throat, and it feels awesome. The only difference between that octopus and a good steak is that Asians are efficient and skip the cooking part.

    Get some culture.
