Thread: TNL Movie: Old Boy

  1. Caught this last night and really liked it, great recommendation Gozen.

The hammer fight was definitely the highlight of the movie for me. One of the coolest shot scenes I've seen in a long time.

And what was the deal with the guy holding the poodle near the beginning of the movie? His suicide seemed integral to the story, but they never came back to this guy.

  2. Thumbs Up

    Me too.

  4. This thread is a complete train-wreck.

    The movie was good.

"All creatures will DIE, and all things will be BROKEN: That is the law of the SAMURAI."

  5. Liked the movie a lot. Liked the amount of black humour that was in it. Not really sure how many times I'll actually rewatch it though. Not really into gore (will probably never see Hostel), but thinking back on the movie, its surprising how much is implied and your brain kinda just fills in the blanks to make everything that much worse. Glad to have seen it, and definitely looking forward to "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" to come out.

Anybody else see "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"? Wasn't quite as in your face as "OldBoy", but I felt it wasn't as strong as a movie for other reasons. Some cool ideas in that movie nonetheless though.

  8. She's got spunk. Keep the girl. Waste the dude.
I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

  9. Own this movie, loved it! one of the finest modern Asian movies around and you gotta admit that Squid scene was disgusting, this and "Cannibal Holocaust" weren't the only movies with actual animal killing.

There's also the Italian cannibal movies "Cannibal Ferox", " Jungle Holocaust" ( a.k.a. Last Cannibal World), " Man from Deep River", " Mountain of the Cannibal God" and " Eaten Alive"! including the Hong Kong made WWII movie "Men Behind The Sun" feature scenes of actual animals getting killed on film. For instance a monkey gets fed to an anaconda as well as a Iguana gets gutted alive in "Mountain of the Cannibal God", a monkey gets it's braincap wacked off with a machete and a goat is stabbed in the throat in "Man From Deep River", a Alligator is gutted and torn apart in "Jungle Holocaust", a wildpig is stabbed 4 times in "Cannibal Ferox" and in "Eaten Alive" there's a scene where a alligator getting stabbed in the skull.

What do you think of that?

  10. Saw this (just signed up for Blockbuster), it was pretty good. I think it was more style over substance, though, and the ending became so out there and fucked up because the "reason" couldn't have possibly been satisfying considering the buildup - smart writing, right there.

Also, the movie, like Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, was kind of muddled in spots but I guess that's kind of the point. I dont think this Oldboy was as good as SfMV, SfMV is simply a masterpiece of brutality and raw desperation, a nightmare captured on film, while this one holds back a little more, but is more entertaining likely.

This director is surely one of the most interesting out there and I really hope he doesnt get lured to Hollywood to make overproduced schlock. The reality is that movies like this or SfMV just cannot be made in Hollywood today thanks to the almighty PG-13.
