I dunno. Only horizontal I've ever really loved was R type Final. Which kicked all sorts of ass. I've liked a few other here and there, such as U.N Squadron back in the day, but in the long run Vertical > Horizontal.

Shooters like that are out there, but I wouldn't put Mars Matrix or Ikaruga into that category. Both are completely playable once you master the gameplay gimmicks.
