you can litter train them. it just requires a lot of time and changing the litter/encouraging certain corners etc etc.
*edit* once you do that, you can actually let them loose. the only thing you need to worry about are wires.

A little Jade update. I suppose the best thing you can find out after you find out that your dog is terminally ill is that there is a SSH SECRET SWIMMIN HOLE four blocks from your house. We have always gone to all sorts of places we're pretty much not supposed to and after I got the bad news I said "Fuck it, we are now going EVERYWHERE that we're not supposed to". So right across the street from Hobo Spot 2 is some old rundown businesses on the ship canal. In between the two is a four foot wide mud beach. That's all she needs. I throw this old piece of 2x8 out and she swims for it. When she gets tired she is rewarded by being allowed to gnaw on this giant log that is half submerged in the water. I'll try to get video.
So yeah, she has a bone tumor sticking out of her shoulder which is causing a slight limp but other than that I'd say she's at about 95-100%. Fuck it's still 110% if she sees a squirrel foolish enough to be on the ground.
Of course this won't last. So I'm taking her swimming every day at 7am and again at 5pm. The SSH is for her only. My other dogs won't ever see it until after she's all finished with it.

Pa, you are a good man. I would tell you to cherish every moment with her, but you already know that. She is blessed to have you as the pack leader.
