It's hard to even imagine what's running around his mind when he writes that shit. It's like he really wants to invent an internet catch phrase and just keeps thowing shit at a wall hoping one of them will stick.Originally Posted by Brisco Bold

He's the first person I'd seen use the word delicious so frequently in such peculiar ways and now everybody does it. So I guess job well done for to him. And it's Tycho who goes on those diatribes not Gabe, and I don't think it's pretentious. I think he genuinely enjoys writing and his blog is a way for him to explore different ways to go about doing it. Just because it's not common language doesn't mean it's bad.Originally Posted by Rumpy

Also, you can take your, "IT'S POPULAR SO IT MUST BE GOOD" bullshit and cram it. The overabundance of total shit in every entertainment medium has proven that little bit of nonsense false. If you're happy appealing to the lowest common denominator, congratulations, but don't act like it's our fucking problem cause we don't laugh at shit that isn't funny.
Edit: Also, I think you misunderstand web comics. They are just comics on the web. Most comics are fucking horrible. You want to write the Garfield of webcomics, knock yourself out but when you post it on these forums and ask for opinions people are going to shit on it. Myself, I'll stick to reading Get Fuzzy, Boondocks, Pearls Before Swine, and the other few comics that are actually worth reading. These comics and stuff like Calvin and Hobbes have proven that you can provide quick entertainment that isn't fucking awful.
Also, I looked at a few On the Rocks strips and it was actually painful to read.

You had a pretty good argument till you mentioned these.Originally Posted by Saint of Killers

The problem here is that popularity is really the only way to determine success or not. Lets face it, nobody gives a fuck what Saint of Killers thinks about webcomics. Your opinion is worth no more or less than mine and the 30 million that flock to Ctrl Alt Del every month (well, mine is). What speaks is volume, and whether we think CAD is good or not is irrelevent. A lot of the CAD hate IS from the fact that he's so successful at what he does. If he didn't people would just never go back there. Is it a measure of quality content? Probably not, but he provides a service to people who enjoy it and that's all you can say about it aside from "I don't like it, it's shit."Originally Posted by Saint of Killers
Some of Calvin and Hobbes didn't land jokes either, and a lot of them aren't laugh out loud hilarious. They provided a nice piece of entertainment for their reader and that's it, and that's what a comic does.
Point in case.Originally Posted by Revoltor

What they provide is a quick bit of "hey, I recognize what they're discussing!" self-affirmation. Penny Arcade can sometimes do something funny with a videogame (though they've been pretty bad lately), but most of them think that mentioning a videogame in and of itself is all that's needed.Originally Posted by jonas
Looking at some of the latest CADs, for example, he's trying to get a copy of Oblivion early. Okay, so...? Nothing is actually done with this. The situation isn't twisted in a clever way. If the subject was something other than Oblivion, the fanbase wouldn't give two shits about those strips. The entire joke seems to be "he wants Oblivion, and so do I!" It's not humor, it's mindless pandering.
I like PVP a lot.

It is still a great story of a boy, his imagination and his pet tiger, but it is never, ever, funny.
