American Idol has been attracting indie people that are tired of waiting for thier big break. Guys like Chris and the grey haired guy, have been performing and writing songs in relative obscurity for years. I think it's awesome they can set aside thier pride and get some well deserved limelight. Too bad music snobs don't see it that way ... but hopefully one day, all of AI will be guys and girls like these two. It would be a nice showcase of undiscovered talent from people who love music. I don't see the harm in it.
Of course, you will never escape the kids that are just products of stage moms/dads. But, you have that in today's pop music.
I have been watching since episode 2 of season 1, so I am a bit biased. But, there is no other show on TV where you can be a nobody, with a little luck and a little talent, be an overnight sensation. It's like the american dream concentrated into little one hour shows. If you are too jaded to appreciate that, then it's your loss.
