Why isn't there one brand-name computer company that makes decent, well-rounded gaming systems at a fair price? Just one? The whole industry operates on this principle that selling people a shitty system will be better because it will increase turnover, but instead people are just going to feel like PC gaming is a pursuit of the rich and elite only and it'll hurt the intustry in the long run. They're such assholes.

The driving force in computer turnover is cutting edge software that demands new hardware. If Dell can't find a way to nurture this, then they're fucked, because all the computers out there can get porn and play music as well as all the other ones out there. If they want people to upgrade they need to service the high end at a competive price point.

I don't like Dell or Alienware.
Any system I can get from either company, I can build for myself for at least a third cheaper.

No they are only reasonably priced compared to other brand name systems. Any mom and pop joint in America could make you that same system for $500 less. There is no excuse for a company that does as much volume as Dell does to charge that kind of premium.

He knows anyone can build their own, his point was that as far as pre-built systems go, Dell XPS are the best value.

That's not saying a lot though.

I just customized my own Dell XPS so that it was roughtly equivalent to my computer except it had a 20" monitor instead. That cost $3500.
My computer cost me $1800 and would be roughly equal in performance to that when it came to games. Mine is overclocked a lot though, but still I just effectively saved $1500 (taking account the monitor) by doing so.

I've been a PC gamer for like 15 years now. I've always operated on a budget, I never spent a lot on a system, and I've always been able to play the newest games out when I want them. PC gaming is treated as a rich kid's privelage by most computer companies, and they're just shrinking the market.

Most of Dell's customers are NOT people who know how to build a computer. Most of them are like your parents or your grandparents. That's who these computers are focused after. To be honest, I have no idea why the XPS series is so damn expensive. I read the specs and I am overwhelmed by the cost. I took a Dell Precision(workstation) and used the same components that are lsited in the Dell ... and saved 2 grand, my question ... am I missing something?

And this was not using my employee discount or Fomcrast discount.

unless im missing something he never even mentioned the Dell XPS line. that's why i mentioned it. as far as being compared to other pre-built companies (voodoo pc, alienware, falcon northwest) they ARE reasonably priced. although i do agree with him that you can build a similar system yourself for a fraction of the price. but that's always been common sense.

until people realize and do a little research, and stop paying these overinflated prices it will always be this way. you want to save money, you better educate yourself.

Those are not reasonably priced systems, either. My point was that none of them are competitvely priced compared to a home-built, or mom-and-pop-shop built.
