I'm pretty sure we've (the United States) already been using these nuclear Bunker Buster bombs/ missles.
The nuclear material is super dense depleted uranium. In this instance there isn't a nuclear reaction/explosion - but still radioactive material is spread in the air and can have repercussions for generation to come.

The farther down a nuke detonates the larger the area it irradiates. The ground water especially becomes toxic, and of course the explosion itself causes the irradiated dirt to be upthrown and then scattered in the downwind. This will scorch the Earth; cause cancer and birth defects for generations in anyone within a wide area of the explosion zones. We've seen this before in Iraq, and that was just from the chemical waste of DU rounds in the soil.
