Well, thats the thing. For me, if a game happens to have Mario in it but its GAMEPLAY is significantly different from say, a Mario PLATFORMER, like for example, Super Mario Strikers, I count it as a new IP.I wouldn't count any game that has mario or related characters as a new IP. Same with Metroid. Not new.
Why?
If Super Mario Strikers has starred a completely new character (or set of characters) but with the EXACT same gameplay and it originated on GC, even you WOULD count it as a new IP.
So if Mario Strikers has EXACTLY the same gameplay with a new set of characters, it gets dubbed a new IP, but with mario and co it's not? o_O
It's gameplay that matters. For example, it would be ridicoulous to say Paper Mario and Mario 64 are the same IP. One is a turn based RPG, one is a 3D platformer.
In short, different gameplay = different IP

No. So most of that list is BS, and the ones that aren't BS almost all suck. I'll give you Super Mario Strikers though.
Firstly, I was not saying ANYTHING about whether the games I listed were good or not. Thats a matter of personal opinion. I'm sure I greatly dislike some games you love
I was simply pointing out to those who thought Gamecube hasd very few new IPs, that it , in fact, does have several new IPs.
Well, then I guess we personally disagree on what is a new IP -_-
Ah well ..![]()

What the hell is "IP"?
Intellectual property. In gaming, it usually refers to a setting and group of characters and imagery that constitute a franchise, but it can also be used in a more technical sense to refer to any copyrightable material that has no physical existence but is unique to its rights holder.
In this instance, if I make a game about soccer, Nintendo can't sue me. If I rip off their play mechanics, Nintendo can't sue me. If I make a game about Mario, Nintendo can sue the pants off me. Mario is really the IP here, unless you want to include the Mario Strikers logo and artwork, by which definition every game is a 'new' IP. Even Madden has a unique copyright every year.

Isn't Mario Strikers based off of Soccer Slam anyway? Wasn't that an IP that originated on GC?

I do find it funny that talks of the game being on-rails has been derailed. Okay, bad joke.
