Talking Points Memo: I had a parody column on this very subject set to go for next week's Torch Newsletter, but it's not that funny after what went down last night. So here goes. I don't see dead people, and I'm not a member of the Psychic Friends Network, but I think I can predict the upcoming storylines for World Wrestling Entertainment. Don't believe me? Let's look at what we know so far.
At the September pay-per-view, we saw the main event between Undertaker and Brock Lesnar thrown out after the referees lost total control over the match. That, in turn, is setting up this month's pay-per-view main event between The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar, which will be a Hell in a Cell matchup.
On top of that, you have last night's big clustermess, where Triple H came out right before we went off the air and killed a hot crowd by letting everybody know about Kane's dirty little secret. Apparently, Kane is a murderer.
So, does any of this sound familiar to you people? Especially those of you who read the "Newsletter Flashback" section of this very website?
Five years ago, The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels had a wild main event at the Ground Zero pay-per-view, which ended in a no contest. Five years ago this very month, WWF was setting up a big return match between Shawn Michaels and Undertaker for the October pay-per-view, the first ever Hell in a Cell match. And five years ago, Paul Bearer revealed to the world that The Undertaker was a murderer, having killed his parents and his younger brother, Kane. Kane ended up making his debut in that very same Hell in the Cell match. These storylines helped move the WWF into a more competitive position, as they ratings started to break the 3.0 barrier on a more regular basis. I would recap the other WWF storylines from October 1997, but I'd hate to have to put a big "SPOILER WARNING" at the top of this column.
Keep in mind that all this comes at a time where Vince McMahon is supposedly after the members of his creative team to come up with new storyline ideas, you know, the type that haven't been done before.
When a masked Katie Fick comes down to ringside at No Mercy with a serious mad-on for Kane, don't say you weren't warned.
