I miss those $0.85 a gallon days. Damn.

  2. Apparently if 1/3 of SUVs in the US changed to diesel (which is the natural fuel for an SUV, which is a work vehicle) it would save 1.4 million barrels of oil a day.

You should consider a TDI engine. Trade in your '01 Mirage for a '01 Jetta GL TDI and your MPG will go from 26/32mpg to 42/49mpg ... plus your gas tank will increase by 2 gallons allowing you to easily go 3-4 days easy without filling up.

I've known a few folks who had long commutes (50+ miles each way) and most of them bought TDI's simply for the fuel economy.

Plus with a TDI if the shit really hits the fan and gas becomes $10/gallon ... you can convert to peanut oil or some other hippy shit.

  4. Buzz ~ Thanks for the heads up. I've been wondering about the economy of a TDI. And I had noone to ask for an opinion on it. So, thanks; next question is this ... Is it auto or manual? I don't know how to drive stick. Plus traveling down the NJ Turnpike, sometimes stick gets to be a PITA! Just curious.

I get 25 mpg, and drive 250 miles/week, so I get a nice even 10 gallons every week. It's pretty lame that in the span of a few weeks I spent $5 more a week on gas, but what can I do? I can't walk; school is 8 miles away, and work is 12 miles away. Oh well.

  6. Yes you can get the VW Jetta TDI's in Auto or 5 speed manual.

That seems a bit implausible... we use about 22 billion barrels so you're talking about over 5% of the daily US oil usage... or are you talking about the entire world's fleet of SUVs?

No in 10 years the batteries will need replacing, which will cost thousands, not to mention all the earth killing by-products of the manufacture and inevitable recycling of the those batteries.

    Bio-Diesel/Hydrogen/CNG FTW.

  10. I drove to the beach and 3/4ths of the vehicles I saw on the highway were trucks, vans or SUV's. I really didn't think we had gotten that dumb. I hate America.
