Thread: Question about when Suikoden III and IV were released...

  1. There seems to be a lot of people who hate Suikoden III for no apparent reason. Its actually one of the best RPG's on the PS2. I would say that the top five RPG's on the system are:

    1) Wild Arms 4
    2) Shadow Hearts
    3) Shadow Hearts 2
    4) Shadow Hearts 3
    5) Suikoden 3

So yeah, Suikoden 3 beats out many of the over hyped and DISAPPOINTING RPG's on the PS2. Honestly, the PS2 RPG's have just been really disappointing. Most of them look like they will be good, and then they just turn out mediocore. So, Suikoden III is easily better than Star Ocean 3, Grandia 3, Xenosaga, and Final Fantasy X.

Suikoden 4, on the other hand, is utter crap. Seriously, I played that game for about 20 hours and I really really wanted to like it. However, the game just does almost everything wrong and it wants you to hate it. Suikoden 4 comes very close to the Ephermal Fantasia level of awfulness.

So, I am really hoping that Suikoden V will be at least as good as part 3. I bought Suikoden V the day it came out, but I haven't even opened it yet because of this time sucking teacher credential program I am enrolled in. So, I can't wait to open up Suikoden V once I get a second of free time.

As for Kingdom Hearts II, that game has been pure garbage so far as well. Samurai Legend Musashi, is way under-rated, and its a much more enjoyable game than Kingdom Hearts II.

  2. I don't know if you're crazy or not. I... want to believe what you say, though.

Dragon Quarter, Wild Arms 4, Radiata Stories, Digital Devil Saga 1, and new surprise guest Metal Saga are all in the running for my favorite PS2 rpg. I keep seeing Sui 3 and keep passing it up. Oh, and there's very little that isn't better than Xenosaga ep. 1.
    Donk

This is, bar none, the WORST list of PS2 RPGs ever made. Congratulations, sir, on having such godawful taste that you blew all the competition away.

    The real list, barring boring Square crap and Disney tie-ins;

    1.) SMT: Nocturne
    2.) Digital Devil Saga 1+2
    3.) Dark Cloud 2
    4.) Disgaea
    5.) Dragon Quest VIII

Suikoden V comes in as a solid runner-up. No other PS2 Suiko game comes close. Wild Arms 4 is garbage. Shadow Hearts is gay, like as in, REAL gay. As in, collect homo smut gay.

    Time for a change

  4. ): Wild Arms 4 is fun.

PS2 had quite a few great rpg's anyway, probably more than PS1.

    OK

Apparently, according to you, I don't have that great taste in games...but at least you let me know in a humorous manner Oh well. However, I do agree that SMT: Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 are all really great games. I rate them much higher than the likes of Grandia 3, Star Ocean, and Xenosaga. They just are not in my top 5 because, although I acknowledge that they are great games, I just couldn't get into them for various reasons.

Dark Cloud 2 is also a good game, but its a bit lenghty for its own good and it gets really repetitive and boring towards the end. Also, I would include it more in the action RPG category with Kingdom Hearts and Musashi Samurai Legend so thats why its not in my list of RPGs.

Disgaea is a fairly cool game as well. I bought it the day it was released, and I liked it. Although I really can't stand Strategy RPG's so I never came anywhere near close to finishing the game. I recognize that its a good game, and thats the only reason I really keep it.

As for Dragon Quest VIII....now I can call myself stupid and say I have no taste in games...because honestly I totally forgot that game was even released. It came out at the exact time I started my teaching credential program, so I don't have the time to play 80 hour RPG's right now. Its definitely the number 1 game I look forward to playing once I get my life back

Lastly, I will always stand by the fact that I had more fun playing Wild Arms 4 than I had playing any RPG in recent memory, and that is the main reason its my favorite PS2 RPG.

Radiata Stories is a great game as well. I loved the humor and characters in that game, that game is definitely a keeper.

I really need to try Dragon Quarter again, because I was never able to give it a chance. I rented it one time, then my friends came by and kept yelling "RPG's ARE GAY!!! Turn this shit off" so I never had the chance to get into the game.

As far as Suikoden III goes, its definitely in the top 5 on the PS2 for me. However, I honestly played it before I played Suikoden II, and I know that many people didn't like Suikoden III because they say its not as good as part II. So, there is always the possiblity that I may have liked the game more because I did not play part II at the time. I still really like Suikoden III a lot though, because I like the character design, and I thought the story was AMAZING. It was really interesting to see the storyline unfold, and see all the same events, from the perspective of three different heroes. I think that aspect alone helps put Suikoden III a step above other RPG's on the system.

  6. damn its ahrd though and especially fo rme because i suck at suikoden games.

  7. Question about when Suikoden III and IV were released...
SIII was released when the Suikoden series was still good.

    IV was not.

I think Final Fantasy X is a very solid release in the RPG genre, but there were a couple things about it that I did not like. Mainly, I didn't really care for any of the main characters and I absolutely hated the sphere grid system. For some reason the spehere grid basically killed most of the game for me. I am really looking forward to Final Fantasy XII though, and its a shame that it took them so long to make a second traditional Final Fantasy game for the PS2.

As far as the RPG's I listed, I think I enjoy them mainly for their fun factor than story. Most RPG's these days are too busy trying to present some epic storyline with boring characters that we have already seen a thousand times before, and they forget that games are suposed to be fun. Wild Arms 4 and the Shadow Hearts series actually add some amount of fun to this stale genre. Most of this fun factor is simply because the Hex Battle System in Wild Arms 4 and the Judgement Ring in the Shadow Hearts series are the two most enjoyable battle systems I have seen.

I know many people would say that the Grandia series has one of the best battle systems, but it just isn't as fast paced as the battle system in Shadow Hearts or Wild Arms 4. I enjoy the Tales' series battle system as well, but even those games are too "button mashy" to compete with some of the strategic elements that the Hex System and the Judgement Ring offer.
