The best thing to do, in my admittedly naive opinion, would be to have a period of amnesty, document all of the illegals, verify their identities, and find out which ones are criminals and which ones are just normal folks, and then deport the criminals and naturalize the rest.

Absolutely disagree with this. I don't want us to turn into douchebag culture police like the Quebecois. Language is a part of culture, and culture is dynamic and ever-changing. It's foolish and futile to try to regulate it.

If you go to Japan, are you just going to speak English, and expect everybody to deal with you? China? France? Korea? If you would, then you're an ass. Go to a country, and try to learn their language or don't go. Same with this country.

What language is our country though? Go back to the 1700s and you'll find English in the Northeast, French in the Southeast, Spanish in the west, and dozens of native tongues in between.

You're the one being an ass, our country is nothing like any of the above, which have been more or less homogenous for over 1000 years, and even if it were not, it evolved as a whole.

We can go back to the birth of this nation and look at all of the different currencies that we used - does that mean the dollar our standard money now?

And nobody is saying that you can't have Chinatown where they speak Chinese, or Little Tokyo speaking Japanese, or any of that. Nobody is saying that you have to give up your native language or not use it. If you go to a countr, no matter where it is, you have a responsibility to learn to speak the language that is used by a majority of its people. Anything else is lazy, irresponsible, and selfish.

That doesn't mean they should pass a law forbidding people from accomidating me. Big difference.

The Mexicans that come here do try to learn English. Virtually every mexican I've met (and as I mentioned before, that's most of this city) speaks some English. But it's not going to happen right away, and there's enough of them that it's in certain parties' best interest to accomidate them. So they do.

I don't think that was his point. I think he's saying shit changes over time. There's no need to regulate something like language. It will work itself out one way or the other by neccessity.

Frankly, I know the Mexicans learn English, and their kids learn it better, but even if they didn't and your grandkids end up being taught in Spanish at school or whatever scenario you're afraid of, wouldn't you just get over it and learn Spanish then? It's such a silly argument.

I've run into A LOT of Mexicans (and Italians, Chinese, etc) that don't speak a word of English.

I agree with shidoshi on this, but I don't think we should go so far as actually passing laws making English the "official language." It's really too late for that, and as Frogcuda said, things like language have ways of working themselves out.
