TNL Movie Thread May 8-May 22: Drunken Master II

Passed up classics like Legend and Labyrinth to bring you one of my favourite martial-arts movies of all time: Druken Master II, or The Legend of Drunken Master. Starring Jackie "the man" Chan this movie has very palatable slapstick humour and some of the most intense fight sequences the man has ever put to film.

Some people say Drunken Master 1 is better, but I disagree. The finale in particular, where Jackie fights a guy whose legs seem to be made out of pistons, is incredible.

Watch out for the best/worst acted onscreen death ever about halfway through.

The train sequence, spear sequence, bamboo polefighting in bar sequence, and generally every other sequence in this movie is fantastic. Very little boring time to struggle through.

If everyone hates this pick/has seen it I'll change it to Legend instead. Tim Curry and a 16 year old Tom Cruise in a fantasy flick, directed by Ridley Scott. The art is amazing.

    Tim Curry is the Devil.

  2. Legend of the Drunken Master has motherfuckin' Liu Kang in it! (cue, "Mortal Kombat" as a post). The last fight was supposed to be against him, but he kept hurting his ankle, so Chan's body guard trained for months to do the fight. I saw it probably around 2000 when it came to US DVD, but I wouldn't mind watching it again (esp. since I hadn't seen the original when I first saw the sequel).

Legend also rocks. Mia Sara is also in it, but was only like 15 at the time. Typical 80s soundtrack too (unless you watch the director's cut in which it's a score).

re: Legend. Typical 80's soundtrack? It's not as though it's filled with Simple Minds songs... The orginal "soundtrack" was a score, too, done by Tangerine Dream. I prefer their synth score to the ho-hum orchestrated Jerry Goldsmith borefest. Especially during the dance done by Mia Sara.

As for Drunken Master II, is Cow really going to make people watch a bad dub? A lot of Anita Mui's humor is absent from the shorter, dubbed version, and that's a real shame. This movie does have some of the greatest fights ever filmed though. That bamboo sequence is probably my favorite.

When I meant typical 80s soundtrack, I meant in terms of a synth score. Obviously it's not Simple Minds, Aha, etc... but you don't hear scores like that anymore... and I also didn't say it was a bad thing I love synth scores.

  5. Lengend's score by Tangerine Dream is awesome (as pretty much every other score they have done), way better than music used in the directors cut.

As for Drunken Master 2 this movie is a TRUE classic. Great great fights and stuns, done by classic Jackie

  6. I have seen both of those movies and they both rock. The last fight scene in Drunken Master is worth the price of admission. As for Legend, I have this weird crush thing for Tim Curry and it also has pre-Scientology Tom Cruise. I adore the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

  7. Didn't Jon Anderson/Yes do the title song for Legend?

Watch whatever version you care to watch. If you want to import it from China or download a fansub, be my guest.

  9. My Drunken Master II was stolen from me A classic action flick though, one of my favorites. The original has some stand out moments too.

I'll check out Legend since I've never seen it.

Shoulda gone with Legend, it seems. This is deader than Music Club.
