PSX had releases until 2002 or 2003. But it didn't have any good ones.
God of War 2 will be the last noteworthy PS2 game.
With all of this PS3 crap going down, I'm going to be sticking with my PS2 for a long, long time. I imagine others will, too.
I also see developers sticking with the PS2 for low-budget releases or anything that's not a sequel/big name/sure thing.
Throw in the fact that the PS3 will play PS2 games anyway, and I'd like to think that PS2 development has a lot of life left.

I really think it'll go on for awhile. We need ESPGaluda II for damn sure- PS2 can handle it fine. Upgrading to PS3 should not be necessary for all the current shooters.
Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
It'll continue on as long as its profitable. I'm looking forward to seeing what insane Japanese releases come out when the PS2 becomes a shovelware platform.
