Thread: Heavenly Sword

  1. There is no excuse for anything less than 60 fps in this gen.
I still don't get this argument. People are going to push hardware regardless of what year it is.

High def is the reason. Takes up a ton of system resource.

For the record, I think this game looks like a generic hack & slasher with overdone animations so far. But bitching about the frame rate? GTFO, it's fine. Every game has frame hitches months before release. Odds of the final being like that = 0.

  4. The demo was like playing with the sixaxis submerged in a bowl of chowder, but yeah it's probably better than that now. Bit hard to tell from the movies recently released.

  5. From the HS blog:
We have talked with Sony about a special edition of Heavenly Sword. After lots of ideas and discussions we decided that there will be no special edition as such...instead we would cram the retail release with as many extras as we could fit onto a BR! The retail disk will feature a series of behind the scenes features as well as the first 2 episodes of a special 'animated series' exploring the history of the Heavenly Sword prior to the start of the game
I can confirm that we are, of course, going to be releasing a demo for Heavenly Sword…and soon! This will be downloadable via the Playstation Network…so keep an eye out for this in the very near future…and i mean very near future!

  6. I played this thing over the weekend, from start to finish via that touring Playstation Bus or whatever the hell it's called, in about five hours.

There is some replay value, but Ninja Gaiden is still far and away superior to this game. A good game, but not $60 good.

Framerate is about 20-25 fps and the gameplay suffers because of this. Attacks feel jerky and stiff due to the lack of animation and it is often hard to tell what's going because there is so much going on at once (a fact that becomes glaringly unforgivable during the first few minutes of final phase of the last battle). This framerate issue also destroys any sense of weight making everything feel like it's made of paper.

Voice acting and cut scenes are top notch, but not the revolution in gaming everyone in the game mags is making it out to be. Just above average.

Enemies are fairly aggressive and intelligent. They will block your attacks, roll out of the way of power moves and wait for a opening before they attack. The sooner you learn how to counter in this game the better off you will fare as it is required to do any real damage to some of the tougher enemies and bosses.

Boss fights are nothing special. Standard "learn the pattern" fare. The only fights that require any special tactics are against General Whiptail whom you must use aerial combos against to do any real damage and Bohan whom you must adapt to on the fly. The only thing that bugs me about these fights is the requirement of the QTE events to finish them. Miss a button press and the boss regains a quarter of their health and you have to whittle them down again, even if you only have a sliver of life left. I was denied a rightful kill several times because of this bullshit.

Overall, this is a good game. A solid 7 if I have to give a rating. I wouldn't recommend dropping 60 bones to play it though as the replay value is questionable.

I'll never buy it now. This is motherfucking 2007.

  8. This seems like a mixture of God of War, Ninja Gaiden, and Dynasty Warriors. It also seems like a game whose sequel will deliver on the promise the original did not. Definitely a rental, but a doubtful purchase.

You'd hate the last boss fight.

The fucker's wings obscure your view and you can barely see what the hell is going on. Then they go ahead and commit a cardinal gameplay sin in first 60 seconds of the final stage of the fight by having all these fucking soldiers running all over the place for NO FUCKING REASON other than to obscure your view. Maybe they were going for some cinematic bullshit, but it just pissed me off because the last fight is a motherfucker of a challenge. The boss getting free shots on me because I can't see what the fuck is going on just reeks of shitty design.

Worse than is the dragon's lair bullshit you have to do to beat the fucker. There are three points where you have to execute a timed button press to knock a sizable chunk off his damage meter and you only get a split second to do it. Miss the button or press the wrong one and he regains a full third of his life back and you have to whittle him down all over again which is hard enough as it is. Hopefully they remove this gimmicky bullshit from the next game.

  10. Shenmue deserved to die for promoting the use of QTEs.
