In a lot of ways, it was similar to an Indiana Jones or National Treaure, and that can't be a bad thing.
I agree. Except I thought National Treasure was pretty bad.

That seems kind of too bad. I saw a trailer for a Reservoir Dogs videogame from E3 and it seems like worst game of all time material.

Joe vs The Volcano is one of those movies thats suppose to be bad its good. I watch it whenever I see its on.

After reading some of your posts I'll probably still go see this movie. Theres not many Tom Hanks movies I didnt like. Lady Killers sucked overall though.

  3. Just got back.

It's a big, dumb, fun movie. Ron Howard fumbles the ending a bit, and there are a few groan worthy moments (I need to find a library!) but I think this is one case where people are reviewing the hype rather than the movie. Taken by itself, it's an entertaining action thriller with a really fun basis, some good over-acting (which is required for something like this, and Ian McKellen chewing the scenery is always welcome), and some great locations.

I could have done without the countless flashbacks and about 20 minutes could have been safely cut with no harm done, but aside from that it's a good flick that's just as dumb as the book but without the painful prose.

Agreed, I couldn't help but think how a movie where 3/4 of the run time is taken up by yelling in a run down factory could actually be fun. And the other 1/4 is them eating in a diner. So maybe we can have some kind of cooking sim with phoenix write style back and forths? Or they could just turn it into an unplayble thrid person shooter that has nothing to do with the movie, you know either works.

That I have read the book is not a cause for celebration. It is inelegant, pedestrian writing in service of a plot that sets up cliff-hangers like clockwork, resolves them with improbable escapes and leads us breathlessly to a disappointing anticlimax. I should read a potboiler like The Da Vinci Code every once in a while, just to remind myself that life is too short to read books like The Da Vinci Code
This is absolutely 100% correct. I was wincing through it the entire time, watching every single literary cliche from Lit 101 slowly pass me by.

I was too. Then my brother said that the Klopecs had moved down the street from us in an empty house and were going to kill me. I need own that movie.

As for the DaVinci Code... the terrible reviews it's getting make me reluctant but I'll probably check it out eventually.

  7. Saw it last night, I thought it was boring. I haven't read the book though, so maybe I was missing something. I was praying to Jesus at the 2 hour point for the movie to end.

If its that boring theres no way I can sit there for 2.5 hours. The theater in my town is pretty bad and the seats have barely any padding. If the movie sucks, it just makes the seats that much worse.

I thought it was a fun movie. The pacing was frantic and Tom Hanks was believable as Robert Langdon. The one thing I hate about movies directed by Ron Howard is how they're so clinically technical that they lack a sense of creativity. For this movie, a movie supposedly ham-fistedly written, I think his direction was spot on. It allowed the ridiculous plot to unfold at its pace without any interference.

Anyway, it was a good fun movie. It kind of felt like a "smarter" Indiana Jones, although not really.

  10. This really looks like the feel-good comedy of the summer. I hope it delivers.
